I need advice on what is needed for a basic gun cleaning kit. My cabinet is full of "stuff" that I've bought based on someone's claim to fame. What I want is a simple, no BS gun care kit that doesn't take up a lot of space. I've pondered the Otis kits but don't know anyone that has one. I do have a one piece, stainless steel cleaning rod for long barrels as well as a shorter one piece for pistols.

You don't need a 'kit". Just a good rod, the right size brush, a jag, your choice of solvent and oil. Toss in a bag of patches and some q tips and call it quits.

bore snakes and patches, cue tips solvent.pretty basic, unfortunately ive got ten times that much stuff

Carbon rod would be #1 on my list. Then get what brushes you want and what jags. They make brush kits and jag kits if you have a lot of calibers. I use wipe-out, hoppes 9, and rem-oil.
Most kits are going to come with a crappy rod and a bunch of other stuff you will never use

I have recently went through my stuff a couple times. I have a kit from Cabela's that cover about all I need. It's got a bigger and smaller rods, you can put the handle on just one rod for pistol. It came with brushes/jags/mops for the most popular calibers, more that I got, or ever will have. It came with some patches. It's about all you need. I do have a .22 caliber bore snake and will probably get a .17 caliber. I switched to Ballistol which cleans and lubes so there is less stuff to keep up with there.

FYI I took handle off one of the rods I had and now insert rod end into power drill. Makes cleaning easier.
