My tomatoes have southern blight. I just pulled 3 plants and did the stem in water test, no milky substance. What really tipped me off was the rot and white mold growing at the base of the stems. The white mold has little white beads growing on it and is characteristic of southern blight. Also not a good disease to have, but it only lives in the top few inches of soil.

You might be able to spray a fungicide on and stop it.
supposedly only commercial fungicides work on this one

yep not BW or the outer layer of the stem would be dark brown too as it basically chokes the plant but a water test is the best to detect. i would solarize that area for 4-6 weeks and it should kill off the fungus.

and you did nothing wrong in your gardening practices, its the high heat and moisture that generally causes it to become serious. by the way, any gardening utensils that you may have used around those plants and soils need to be cleaned thoroughly as little pieces of soil can make it spread throughout the garden.
