I am sure this has been dsicussed several times. But I am new to this site and am in market to purchase atv disc for next spring planting. Hard to wait on farmer and ussually miss the best planting times. So with that said:

What are the opinions on ATV pulled discs out there? I know that they are all pretty much too light and need weight added. Which ones are worth their cost and which ones work best as paper weights? I am will ing to pay good money but actually want one to actually disc up the ground.

Just make sure the ground has been broken in the past. If it is a "new" food plot area, that has never been turned, even a "real" disk may not be able to do it. ATV disks worked fine on previously turned ground.

I bought the one made by Tarter Gate company from BPS 2 years ago. I love that thing ! It weighs about 450# and easily cuts 4-5 inches+.......Just can't get too close to trees or you are in for one heck of a jolt ! I added 80 ft of logging chain on top for a little extra weight but it does require a liquid cooled machine to pull it.

The one from Monroe tuff line is really good. Bought it from Bass pro several years ago and my local co-op carries it in florence ala. Has been a dandy.

Yeah....the one in the link, that I said I bought, could be pulled by a truck. It is pulled via a standard 2" ball. I use the truck if its really hot out when I want to disc or if I'm putting an extreme amount of weight on it for breaking new ground.

i found the best thing to do is to find a old tractor drag disc, sometimes you can find them dirt cheap"i had one given to me" if you are any good at all with hand tools or know some one who is ,you could build a better disc for near nothing .mine works awsome and its heavy so no need to had weight.

That's what I was using when my truck blew up!

But you can find them cheap...

I've got a atv disc I bought from TSC. I'm not that happy with it, wished I would have bought a big one for a tractor. It does ok if you do figure eights but It's too light and has to have additional weight put on top of it to really make it get into the chunks

Do you have any pictures of yours? Did you just use a tractor disk and pull it with your 4 wheeler? Does it hook up somehow or did u convert it etc?

How heavy is too heavy to pull with an atv.. I kno it depends on the atv.. But I've got a 650 so I'm curious as to what I could realistically do with it...

I'm n the market as well but don't want to drop $1800 on a disk like the one in the link...

I paid $800 for the one I've got and it was worth every penny. I even bent a pair of gang hangers hitting a large stump that was 1/4 inch under the surface (okay maybe I was going a little fast!) and Tarter gate sent me replacements in 3 days at no charge.

that was me those atv disc are just way to high,i used a drag type disc that had only one row of blades.it was 6 feet wide .that was to wide for my plots.so i just set one row behinde the other useing all the parts from the disc.that made it about 3 to 3.5 wide which was just about right.i used only a grinder with cut off blades and hand tools and bought a ball hitch and a few bolts the thing worked great i removed any thing extra i could to lighten it up because those things are heavy,i have a 500 artic cat,i fixed it so i could adjust the the cut "which you cant do with the new ones that i have seen" in full cut its a load for the cat but i can put it in less cut and its not bad at all just depends on the ground you are cutting.i pulled it in all sod ground and it worked like a charm .waited till i had a lite rain to soften the ground just a bit.i also found a old three point hitch disc and it would be super easy to make a good one out of it too,you can do it the hard way like i did with hand tools but if you can get a cutting torch and weld it make it go faster.i had about a hundred in mine and i bought things i didnt need so it could have been cheaper .its the way to go unless you like giveing money away .i will text you a pic right new i got it took apart to tight up the blades and the to do some minor changes.

That would be awesome if you could get any pics.. I'm a visual person so its a little hard to picture everything without seeing it... When you get the pics let me know and ill pm you my # or you can email them to me either is great!

Thanks again I really appreciate it! Its nice to know people are nice enough to share ideas like this to save other ppl lots of $ :)

ok i would be glad to,first i would start looking around for a old disc,i like to take a quick look when passing by old barns ,i see them sitting in the weeds alot of times.but even the tractor dealers have them in the back lot.it really depends on the kind of disc you find as to how you are going to convert it into a atv disc.but it can be done with any of them.i just got a three point hitch disc that was in bad shape from a guy that bought a new one. its going to be super easy to convert it .since it has four sets of blades under it i may have enough to make two .all i have to do on it is cut the front half off and add a hitch,if i want to get fancy i may add some wheels on top and make a flip disc like they sale at bass pro.for a fraction of the cost.i may even sale one not sure yet,it may take a while but i will get those pics to you, when i get them finished.but i am sure if you start looking at some of these disc thats just sitting around and looking online at the way these ""over priced"" atv disc are made it want take long and you to will have a game plan on a cheap atv disc of your own.

A tip for you guys that have problems disking with the lighter equipment. Buy a water bladder or container to fit or ride on your disk. A big cooler works fine. Just fill it up with a bucket and being that water is 8.34 lbs per gallon if you have a contain that holds 100 gallons you've added 834 lbs to your disk. This will help "dig in" on that rougher ground. Once your done you just dump the water out and you don't have a ton of weight to haul around in your truck.
