i am fixing to acquire one and need to know where i can come up with a good source for uppers that dont cost $2000 bucks. everything i have looked at costs more than the dang gun and i guess i just am not any good at online searching.

I'm sure there are others, but I'm most familiar with the DPMS variety. I'm not sure if links are allowed, but a search for LR308 should get you close.

can you shoot 7.62 out of a 308 winchester barrel / i mean is like the whole 223 to 5.56 thing

That's a pretty fuzzy area. The difference isn't quite as much as the .223/5.56. You probably won't have a problem, but that depends on the chamber in your particular rifle. You may find that a 7.62 will not close into your .308 match chamber. Hope this helps.

Yes you can, .308 has a higher pressure than 7.62x51.

As far as your original question, I don't have any experience with an AR10 but I built my own DPMS .308 for under $2,000.

are most of the mods you can do on ar 15's pretty compatible with the ar 10's, like buttstock changes and stuff????

You have to watch/research if the parts are compatible between differing manufacturers. Interchangability is not as universal across the board in the 'AR 10' class as it is in the 'AR 15' class. I have looked at them a time or two but they are so dang heavy I passed. PH

Ok I have looked pretty much everywhere and cant find a drop in quad rail for an AR 10 anywhere so it looks like my only option is a upper rebuild with a free floating barrel... My question is do I need a gas block for the front, I am already ordering an upper housing, quad rail, and buttstock, and before I do all this I need to know if I need a gas block???

Can or can't find a drop in rail?Don't know anything about quality but Midwest Industries makes a drop in rail.This may or may not be what you're looking for.

You absolutely need a gas block with the same interior diameter as the exterior diameter of your barrel's profile
