I seldom find many rubs at Ames which is surprising under our buck management program. I do find scrapes and have started finding a few already. Rutting activity is staggered across the state but some bucks will start pestering does a month in advance. In SW Tn we won't see any potentially serious rutting action any earlier than the 3rd week of November. There are exceptions to the rule. I don't know how to describe the scrapes I find this early. They aren't breeding scrapes at least yet. They're more like a hormonal surge action by bucks wandering through their areas particularly from feeding to bedding areas. They may even serve as introductory sites for bucks that have already shifted into these areas from their summer ranges. Anyway, fun to find.
