Any chance that TN has plans to allow Handi Rifles during "primitive weapon"/ muzzleloader season like some other states? Someone on another thread mentioned the possibiliy.

I plan on buying a muzzleloader this year but if there might be a change I will wait. I currently do most of my hunting in MS where they are allowing more and more rifles during their not-so-primitive weapon season now.

I don't know, but I would like to see it.It would save me money on bullets, cleaning supplies, powder, and a whole lotta time!!LOL..I plan on selling my ML and am going to buy me a savage smokeless ML!

Posts on the TWRA part of this forum say no-

Would not matter to me if they did. Until they open rifle season on the first Saturday of November, nothing compares to a .40 smokeless muzzleloader.

if they call it primitive weapons/muzzleloader then a smokeless cartridge would not be primitive, whether it be single shot or not.

i believe in MS it was a screw up with the wording.

the only way i would welcome it, is that it would have to be a single shot rifle produced prior to 1900 or a replica of such rifle, and the cartridge has to contain BP or a BP substitute, and the cartridge would have to have been originally designed for BP.

if not, it would just be an extension of rifle season.

i hope that single shot high power rifles are never made legal for the muzzleloader season, the rate of fire will shorten the season to a very few days as the harvest will increase too much,& cecil30-30 im going to get a savage also :) ,mike243

Below is MS's version of "primitive weapon" season.

PRIMITIVE WEAPONS
"Primitive firearms" for the purpose of hunting deer, are defined as single or double barreled muzzle-loading rifles of at least .38 caliber; single shot, breech loading, cartridge rifles (.35 caliber or larger) and replicas, reproductions or reintroductions of those type rifles; and single or double-barreled muzzle-loading, shotguns with single ball or slug. All muzzle-loading Primitive Firearms must use black powder or a black powder substitute with either percussion caps or #209 shotgun primers or flintlock ignition. Breech loading single shot rifles must have exposed hammers and use metallic cartridges. Cartridges may be loaded either with black powder or modern smokeless powder. Scopes of any magnification are allowed on primitive weapons.

My substitute is a blend of 4759 and RL-15 at the moment-

What is primitive about a scope, 209 primer, sabots, powder pellets.......

I think they should just call it Black Powder Season...and include Black Powder Substitutes but not smokeless powder.

my .02

You cannot have that definition. Pyrodex (a black powder substitute) is classified as a smokeless powder. Its a catch 22.

I really believe TWRA wants deer harvested with no care what you push down your barrel.

They have tons of data that would encompass all powder types ( ie every muzzleloader kill to date). They have a good idea now of kill rates with a mz, powder type does not matter.

The only change I see happening before too long is making opening day of archery - opening day of deer season (any weapon = bow, mz, gun).

exactly.

In many states, "Primitive" meant Black Powder or BP Subtitute, Muzzle Loading percussion or flint, patched round ball, iron sights. No scopes, no sabots, no conicals, no inlines.

No dice. I doubt we'll ever go back to that, unless they make it mid to late January.

all of this stuff opens a can of worms! persoanlly i wish we still had just the Black powder season with no inlines no sabots and all of that stuff that goes with it.use black powder and flint or caplock. if TWRA is only interested in deer harvesting then it would be much better to allow Archery & ML's to harvest Doe's during gun seasons and not have it as Bucks only. your still only allowed 3 Bucks no matter what weapon you use. Sometimes Doe's don't show up on the few days you get to hunt. they have no time or place to be on any given day.
