While both of my sons really enjoy the outdoor life, I think my youngest boy seen here loves it the most. He just turned 13 and has been hunting for about 5 years now with me and rarely passes an opportunity to go.

Sunday morning about 7:00am this deer emerged from the heavy fog and after careful glassing with my binoculars and his scope, we declared it a doe. He took the shot at 60 yards and it dropped in its tracks. We climbed down and walked over to discover that the doe was actually a spike. Not what he wanted but he is 13 and was completely thrilled anyway as was I. So far this kid is 5 for 5 on shots on deer with four dropping in their tracks and the fifth on a short lung shot recovery. Put a .308 in his hands and he out shoots myself and his older brother.

My wife asked me last night if it was hard for me to hunt this weekend because I could only look and not shoot. When I laughed she looked at me puzzled. I had to explain it was the highlight of hunting season for me every year to watch my children get out when it is all about them and them only. I think she got it when she finally thought about it.

Good job to all that took children out this weekend to learn some very valuable life lessons.

Nice looking field too. Congrats!!!

Thanks plink. It is a 5 acre field that is surrounded on three sides with dense thicket and one side by big hardwoods. I have bush hogged most of it and left some tall grass in spots so that deer feel safe moving in and out. It has always been a good producer for me.
