i saw a topic on here and didn't want to hijack. i have 32 acres and I wanted to plant some small plots. it is all woods. Excpet in the cedar thickets there are spots were only grass is growing. the dirt looks like it is mostly clay. there is rocks of course, but i was wondering if i cleaned the rocks up and either limed the heck out of the dirt, what would grow in there.

I don;t have a bunch of equipment, so my abilities are limitied. looking for something that will grow in poor soil and doesn;t take a tractor.

any ideas?

Throw and Grow has grow everywhere I've put it so far. We make small kill plots in the woods by just clearing leaves with our boots and tossing it out,no prep at all.

It has been my experience that if you have land that has a cedar thicket, then that is probably an area where there is a lot of rock under the soil. Not much else will grow in rock crevasse than those cedars. I would think that whatever seed you put down would germinate and stay up fine in the wet winter, but most likely die out as it begins to get hot. Just my 2 cents.

yeah it is definetely rocky in there. the other side of the property has a small thicket as well but it is more open, has tall grass growing in there and the one open area which is more dirt is not that rocky. there are also a couple of red oaks over that way.

You said you might lime it good. That would definately help. Fertilize wouldn't hurt either.
