Got my Soil Test back from the CO-OP today. Says my Ph is sitting at 5.3. I plan on Soybeans and it looks like I need to raise it to 6.2ish. If I'm reading this right, it looks like they want me to pour 1.75 tons of lime to it. Does that sound right? (I'm gonna need a bigger wheelbarrow).

I think I paid 30ish per ton last year. Most places will have a minimun order, before they deliver. Ask your local co op for a good local supplier. They will usually work smaller orders in while in the area delivering to larger farms.Contact them sooner than later

Depends on what part of the state you are located. Middle and East TN normally runs about $22-$25/ton spread, west TN is a little higher.

Lets say I do this and spread 5 tons of lime in the field, how long before I will have to do it again? What's the best way to do this? Disk first, lime, disk, plant??? I'm new to all of this and I'll have to hire out the tractor work.

redwing the guys at the williamson co-op told me that pellitized lime works faster the ag lime! ag lime takes up 6 months and some cases a year to take affect! if you buy it bag lime by the pallet it is $1.00 cheaper....$3.60 a bag.

This may be a fallacy. Here is what the below link basically says.

"Based on research from several states, it appears that the pelletized lime reacts no faster to raise the soil pH than good quality ag lime applied at recommended rates. In fact, incubation studies at Michigan State University found the pelletized lime to have a slower rate of reaction. Field research from other states indicate the rate of reaction is about equal to ag lime."

I can guarantee you it'll be way cheaper to have a truck spread ag lime than you doing it yourself. It wouldn't hurt to exceed your lime recommendations a tad either. If you need 1.75 lbs./acre I'd go with 2. You can have it spread on top of the ground before cutting it in because it leaches into the soil anyway. We limed like that every 5 years.

I used my 4 wheeler and a 10 cu ft trailer, and a hand scoop and believe it or not distributed 25000 #'s last spring on around 25 fields.....Not recommended for the casual deer management lover but for those who want it bad enough ........it works!

So 8 tons spread over 4 acres. Cha-Ching $200. Tractor work roughly 2 or 3 hours, cha-ching $100. How much will a "Bushell" of soybean seed plant?

if your going with soybeans i would recommend big fellow or large lad soybeans!! If your not gonna go that route,.. i would recommend a mix of sorghum, lablab and a climbing variety of soybean. If your going with big name seed,.. imperial powerplant is good stuff.

By the way,.. you forgot the fertilizer cost on that 4 acres,.. CHA-CHING!!

well tell that to the co-op guys at the williamson county shop and see what they say. you may be right gil but i would think the people there no alittle more than me and you!
