Before I give you mine I'll provide a quick update on my property:

I hunted it for the third time on Thursday, so far this year we are seeing a good # of bucks, but I don't know where my shooters are. I haven't had cameras running like last year.

I saw 2 2.5 8's and a older deer that I couldn't get on quick enough...overall the best sighting hunt we have had on this property since we have owned it buck wise.

So I was pretty excited, but did some looking around/thinking.

Observations:

The back of the property is where we moslty hunt, bc that is where we get pics and sightings.

1)Sign on the front part of the property is really down this year.
Hypothecized Reason: There has been work going on to put an oil well in and clearing lanes for electrical and pipe...

2) The first "bowl" sanctuary is growing out of briars and is mostly 3-4" tulup poplars
Reason: natural succession of timbered land.

Potential solutions:

-Frost seed the powerline path in white clover/Plant some mass trees (thinking sawtooths for quicker production).
Will this work on a steep grade?

-Create pockets of openings in the "pole timber" by clearing 15 yd areas to encourage more browse/ideal bedding habitat. Clear deer paths from these beds to more huntable areas and from one patch to the next.

This is very labor intensive work, but I think it will increase the holding ability the bowl and make the deer that bed there more predictable. What do y'all think?

I have 3 saws and a trimmer. I'm going to try and get 3 buddies to come with me and make it a work day transition into a camp out or hotel stay during late winter...any other ideas for me?

What are y'all going to be working on?

yep,"cover stage" will eventually turn into open stage, its a continual project for me.

Sawtooths are very hardy, but I would consider the ability to water them the first year or so,in case we have a very dry summer.

I'll be able to get to the trees, they will be in a cleared path 15 yards wide going down a relatively steep grade...

But I won't be there a lot, every 2 weeks really. Is there some set up that works well to water trees? I imagine a good soaking ever 2 weeks would be fine in dryer times and if I could move the set up from new trees year in and year out it might be worth it...

I dont expect to much planting as Im about full capacity of fruit trees. I also have plenty of cover. So I think Ill focus on actually making hunting easier, I havent done any of that. Like shooting lanes through the thick stuff, etc. Having timber on my other place too, about 20 acres worth.

Unfortunately my list is once again a mile long. Mainly clearing out edges that have encroached on my plots/roads. Prepping for frost seeding. I have around 50 trees to plant that I want to start on as soon as I can. I also want to build a few shooting houses.

What do you need to do to prep for frost seeding?

x2

I'm working on finding some trees now. I love the work time of the year. Gotta make sure the saws are tuned up.

mine includes
(1)making a new food plot in a timber cut to provide spring and
summer protein
(2)do some thinning around some of the whiteoaks, plan to start
on one side of my property, and do so many each year
(3)cut down some useless trees for new growth
(4)plant some fruit trees in several different areas, and baby
them from now until they are alot bigger
(5)start BSKs hack and squirt method in some areas
