A Positive Thing for Turkey Nest

With all the rain in west tn, a bunch of land is staying under water. If i'm theorizing correctly I would think this would force the hens to nest in dryer land away from grounds prone to floods during 2016. This should increase poult success and help the turkey population....OPINIONS.

It sounds logical, but I also think river bottom land produces the best turkey habitat with all of the good vegetation. Even if nest gets washed away, the hens can attempt to renest.


Many people may disagree, but look at all the turkeys in the south Alabama river bottoms. It's prime turkey land all the way around.

They for sure won't make a nest in the water, so if the water is up they will by default nest on higher ground...will this translate into any better nesting success? I doubt it would be much different than a dry year. Turkeys will nest and renest a few times if needed.

If the dry upland provides ideal nesting habitat, then your theory is correct. If its not ideal then predators will likely have a good year.

I've hunted Anderson Tully bottoms some years that stayed flooded all spring and the turkeys lived in the trees. I think their nesting fell by the wayside in those years.

As long as the hens aren't too stressed out by the flooding (if so, they simply won't lay), they should nest on dry ground if they are familiar with it. Of course, once it dries out, there must be a water source within reasonable distance for the poults to survive.
