Well, it's been a tough season for me so far, but I punched a tag this morning. I saw more deer this morning then I've seen all year.......at least 12 or more. Bucks were running does everywhere, but I couldn't see them to tell how big much less get a shot due to it being so thick. This buck came in grunting behind 4 does. It was so thick that I couldn't tell a whole lot about him and made a quick decision. I shot, and he ran about 20 yds and stopped. I got reloaded, and he took off again. He hit an opening and warped the ground on the 2nd shot. I was shaking like a leaf it was so intense with the chasing, couldn't see, and then having to shoot him twice. This all happened before 8 this morning. I'd be lying if I said that I was a little disappointed and had some ground shrinkage when I got to him, but it was an exciting hunt. His left side which I saw is perfect, but his right side was messed up and must have been injured in velvet. He was a big bodied deer. I was still excited just due to the whole ordeal this morning.

I actually hit him back the first shot. I think I hit a limb but got high shoulder the second shot.

Also, I pulled a card from a camera 30 yds to my left. While I was trying to get on this deer, I had a pic of another buck that I think was bigger than this one that I didn't know was there due to focusing on the other deer. I saw a doe there right before the buck I killed came over the hill. Crazy morning that I won't soon forget.

Congrats on what sounds to be an exciting hunt. Even if you never take a shot, witnessing chasing and rutting action like that at close range makes for a successful hunt.

Congrats, that's a fat looking deer. How thick was the fat layer on his back?

It really wasn't super thick. He had some fat around his hams but nothing extraordinary. Even though he was chasing and stunk, he still had been eating rather well. I busted the guts on the first shot, and he was absolutely full of acorns.

Thanks! This one is more about the experience than anything. It was about as fun of a morning as you can possibly have.

I just keep looking at the trail cam photo of the other deer that I never knew was there. Dang it is all that I can say. :) I'm not sure if he is worthy of my 2nd tag right now, but hopefully, he will show back up.
