Thinking about getting one. Been wanting a bolt action 22 for some time. I have a line on a new one for $500.00. Any thoughts on this.

I like the 77/22, but you could get a CZ 452 American for $100 less and have a much better rifle in my opinion.

I have a CZ 452. I've never shot a more accurate .22 rifle. They are simply phenomenal for the money.

my thoughts are $500 is way too much for a bolt rimfire.

But have you shot one?

I LOVE my 22s (10-22, a BL-22 and an ancient Rem552) but I shot my stepfathers 77/22 for years and it was a NAILDRIVER!!! Where ever you pointed it, it SMOKED it. I don't just mean hit within a inch or two, that gun shot from DEAD ON to maybe 1/4" off at MOST! With most 22s you "aim at a turtle" at 50-100 yds and a hit anywhere is fine. With his I always took out the HEADS, same for frogs, limbs, snakes ANYTHING. Just NO comparison. That little gun shot like exactly what it was, a big rifle scaled down for a 22. Hell it's a "mini-mauser", how cool is that?

Pricewise, I'll leave that up to you. I haven't messed with them in awhile so I'd hate to guess the market. But yes it's considerably more rifle than the average 22, but it's built that way so you can expect to pay for that difference.

Now to REALLY mess up the oatmeal! The ONLY other 22 bolt I've been around that was as accurate as that 77/22 was a cheap old Marlin Model 25 I bought as a kid in the early 80s from Fred P. Gattas. For some reason I seem to remember it costing a whole $69.95. :D WOW did that cheap lil thing shoot like fire. I'd STILL have it had someone not "borrowed it without permission" from my truck one night (along with a 25/06 Vanguard) in the early 90s.

I have a clip fed marlin 25 in .22 I love it. I polished the bolt and worked on the trigger a bit. I love it. I yote hunt with it when I'm in tight quarters. I also shoot powderless cartidges out of it when I'm at home in the neighborhood. Cool little. gun. I gave $150 for it and a New Haven (mossberg 500) 20g. Never shot the 77/22 in .22lr, but have shot one in 22 hornet. It was fairly good, but I've heard ppl say that factory ammo out of those isn't the greatest. I have shot a ton of Rugers. I really like the rugers regardless of the typical heavy trigger. I have not shot one with the new LC6 trigger, but most say it's better than those on the MKII and M77's.

Don't know about CZ's either. They seem to be popular on here. Seems like one guy gets on here and everybody here has to get one. But there again I haven't shot one, but in my shooting community they don't get as much recognition as on here.

Good luck to ya

A couple of things I have looked at one is Buds has the gun for $600.00, two on Gunbrokers most are higher than $600.00. I have a 10-22 that is a good shooter so I think a bolt gun would be better. I raely don't like the look of the mag hanging down from most guns but I could live with that. Now keep in mind most likly my grandson will end up with the gun. Heck he will end up with most all my guns as he is my only grandchild.

the CZ has a one piece bolt with dual locking lugs,,a trigger that is very easy to get as good as any and better than most..while the Ruger is a good rifle and I have shot a few in 22 and 22 WMR that were good rifles,I just never got the level of accuracy from them as the CZ,,and yes I have shot them,,a bunch,,

my 452 Ultra Lux is crazy accurate,as is my sons 452 American and they are built to last,,you can get a single shot adapter,5 and 10 round mags..

I wish you could shoot one of my CZ`s before you buy the Ruger,,I am certian you would be sold if you actually shot the CZ..

I think it might shoot better if I put a scope on it,,but I like playin with the Brno Match Sights

I have two Ruger rimfires. A 77/22 and a 77/22 mag. They both shoot well under 1/2" at 50 yards. Plenty good enough for me as I am not competing with anyone other than tree rats and they have a bad day. I had the triggers worked by a gunsmith down to a crisp 16-18 ounces for $35 each. Wood on both my Rugers is better than any CZ I have ever seen. Safety on the Ruger works in the proper direction as it is an American made gun. Also with the Ruger 3 position safety you can open the bolt without placing the rifle in fire mode. Magazines for the Ruger are less than 1/2 the price of CZ mags and ten times easier to find. Ruger 77/22 holds 10 rounds and I think CZ holds 7 maybe. New Rugers come with rings. CZ does not come with rings so the price gap gets much closer. Get a couple spare mags for each and the price difference disappears and then some.
The CZ is for sure a more accurate rifle on average but not by a huge margin. When you weigh the positives of the Ruger I think they are a better gun but that is just my opinion.

I would get the CZ b4 a Ruger, but the Ruger is a nice bolt 22. I'm not sure what CZ rifles you have seen, but most I have seen have very nice wood on them, most Rugers I have seen( and own) have very average to below average wood. Capacity on a bolt 22 is pretty much a non factor IMO, a bolt 22 is more about precision than it is for quantity shooting.

Does Kimber still make a 22LR bolt gun? That was the first Kimber firearm of any kind I ever saw, and fell in love with it. Unfortuantely I was a recent college grad with a new wife and baby, my first house, and NO money to put towards guns.

I have owned two CZ rifles and both had some kind of plain birch looking hardwood. I have owned 6 Rugers bolt guns and all have had American black walnut. Nothing special but all were walnut. I like American wood. I make my living building and servicing American sawmills. I reckon I am biased. ;) The reason I like the higher cap mags is because I hunt and punch paper and hate to keep loading mags especially in the woods. Not a real issue but it is a positive thing for me.

I have never shot a cz .22, but I have heard nothing but good out of them.

I do have a ruger 77/22. It is a super accurate gun, and I love the feel of it.
I think a cz is an excellent gun and you can't go wrong from what I hear. However; if you would rather have a 77/22, I don't think you can go wrong with that choice either.

you can get the CZ rifles in European Beech wood which is denser and more stable than walnut, and you can get the CZ in Turkish Walnut,

My sons American has really nice walnut and drives nails,it takes the 5 and 10 round mags but we mostly use the Brno Model 4 Single Shot Adapter the most,,

average turkish walnut found on Ethans CZ 452 American,,now and then you get one that is AA+

Meat Hunter makes some good points. I have a 223 in the 77 all weather skeleton stock and a 25/06 as well. Both are tack drivers. I have 3 10/22's as well as 2 other M77, 1 in 30/06 with the tang safety and 1 in the m77 markII in 270 mannlicher stock. I guess I am Ruger biast.

I have seen some 77/22 on Gun Broker, so you might keep an eye out for one on there. There is also a 77/22 mag on there.

I bought my 77/22 at a gun show about 8-10 years ago for $300, and it was just like new. The same guy had a 77/22 mag for $350, and i really wish i bought that one too.

the Ruger is a good rifle,,I dont mean to be putting it down,,I am not,,for a squirrel rifle and general purpose gun they are very good,,

just for me,I like the total package of accuracy, quality of workmanship and overall fit and finish and by far the BEST Factory Tangent Sights at a reasonable price, the CZ is the best IMO for what you get for the money,,

you can still get the 452 Military Special Trainer with the Beech stock 24 inch bbl and the sights for under 350$$,,I bet the sights are 75$$..

they are both nice rifles and just get the one you like,,in the end thats all that matters,,I just wish Win and rem was still in the market,,I would LOVE a brand new 52D.

funny you should mention the model 25 as that is what i was gonna compare it to. i gave $149 for mine in the late 90's. i know for a fact it will hit a squirrel in the eye at 60+ yds.

Only heard good things about the 77/22, but one of my best friends had a 77/17 (.17HMR) that just wouldn't group well. He messed with it for a few months and sold it and got a Savage 93 in .17 that's deadly accurate.

Ruger is my favorite firearms manufacturer by far. The 77-22 is a great rifle however the CZs are much better imo. In general I would expect significantly better accuracy with a CZ also- although we know each rifle is an individual. Spending 'a lot' relatively for a 22 is the wisest decision a rifleman can make. That is the rifle that he will shoot/use/plink/hunt by far the most of any rifles that he will ever own. And it should be a good one. PH

Well if the weather don't get to bad I am going to do something. Thegun store I am going to has both Rugers and C Z so I canat least look at both. Thinks for all the good advise.

rear sight on the 452,,windage adjustable,,set the rear sight to 25 yards and then you can adjust the elevation on the front sight,

they are realy nice sights,,but you can get the Aperture sights from the Brno #4 which are unreal.
