Since the TWRA has lowered the caliber restrictions on muzzle loaders to .36, I'm thinking about doing something I've been wanting to do for years.

Mostly during ML season I've been hunting with my trusty .54 cal flinter. For quite some time I've had in my collection a modern made percussion fast twist rifle. I alway thought it would do a job on deer but I never did try it because it wasn't legal. The load I'm using is 60 grs 3Fg Swiss, a fiber wad, a Lyman 250 gr cast lead bullet, and a #11 CCI standard cap. I figure the load probably gives similar results to the old 38-55 cartridge which alway had a good reputation as a deer slayer.

I drug it out this past weekend for the first time in years to check her out and to see what she'd do. Below are photos of the gun and my last five shots at fifty yards from rest. Iron sights with a very large rear hunter's aperture were used.

The top two shots were numbers one and two fired. The shot at about 1 o'clock was #2. Upon firing it the gun's hammer was kicked back into halfcock and the spent cap bounced off my ball cap bill.....Uh oh, a burnt out nipple. Fortunatly I had a brand new nipple and after replacing the old one the lower three shots were the result. Overall the group was less than 1 1/2" and after the new nipple was in place the bottom three measured 7/8". not too bad for iron sights.

Think it will do?

On TC's website you can still download data for the older guns shooting maxi balls/round balls.

For the .36, it gives three loads with its 128 gr maxi. The max load of 60 grs black powder gave 2001 fps and 1138 ftlbs of energy at the muzzle.

Looking at those figures, it would appear adequate to me. Should still have plenty of energy left at 50 yards. Just my opinion, as I've never used maxis and know nothing of their performance on deer.

I'll be submitting TWRA a 7mm thought for next year...

Good luck with your weapon. Looks like it's perfect.

My wish is for Harvester or some sabot company to make a .40/.358 sabot so I can use some real rifle bullets in the .40 PacNor I am hoping to order soon.

I been wondering why the caliber restriction was lowered to 36. I thought maybe someone had already come out with a sabot so the modern guys could shoot a smaller rifle bullet with better ballistic characteristics.

As a long time traditional ML shooter/hunter, I always personally felt a 40 round ball was too light for deer, much less a 36.

MMP makes a .45 sabot for the .355-.357 bullets, Hornady has FTX in .357 140 gr. bullet I plan on trying out of my 1-20 twist Origanal Kinght real soon. I hope this helps.

I tried the precision bullets .45/.357, but you're still limited to pistol type bullets. A .40/.358 would open up a lot of TRUE rifle bullet choices.

That's what I was thinking with the 36 minimum requirement....that is, shooting a real rifle bullet.
