Ive got a 357 lever action that I never shot and was thinking about trying to kill a deer with it and was wanting to know if anyone has any sugestions on ammo and what type of effective range to expect.

the 125 gr federal hollowpoints have always served me well. the younger boy killed his 1st deer with it. marlin 1894

I killed two with 158gr XTPs over AA#9. 75yds was my MAX due to open sights and limited practice. But the two i hit did not make it far.
Good luck,

doubletap ammuntion has some stout .357 loads that are sure to impress out of the added barrel length of a levergun. Pretty reasonable prices as well for premium ammunition.

I have some their 10mm auto stuff, and they have exceeded my expecations.

Also don't forget that Hornady offers their 140FTX in their Leverevolution line for the 357. It's quite hot from a carbine length barrel!

;)

i wasn't aware of that. i need to check those out.

I haven't been able to hunt in TN much the past several years, so I'm out of the loop. Are hollow points legal?

I'm not trying to argue - I'm just curious. I thought I remember they weren't legal at one point (20 years ago)?

I'm having no luck finding the equipment requirements for deer hunting on the TWRA website (minimum caliber for rifles, etc)...

as far as i know, hollow points have never been illegal for hunting. FMJ's are illegal. all centerfire rifles/handguns are legal for deer.

Hmmm... I would have bet a lot of money that they used to be illegal. I remember when my dad gave me my first .30-30 he also gave me a box of hollow points... and I was pretty certain I could use the for deer. Wish I had an old TWRA manual. Not that it matters now, but I'm curious...

Another thought... there used to be a minimum caliber. Did that change also? I'm reading now that any centerfire round is allowed.

yes. that changed 2 or 3 years ago. also no barrel length restrictions on pistols so your 25 auto is legal :D
