300 win mag, thoughts?

No such thing as over kill, I have everything from 243win to 338WM. These days I mostly use 45-70 for deer out to 200yards, I love my 1895 SBL, but past that I usually carry 30-06. The 30-06 ammo is cheaper and common, with less recoil, plus its only 200fps slower than 300WM.
 
I'm glad to se this topic discussed. Unless a magnet fishing expedition goes really well later today, I will need a new rifle by the 2021 deer season. I have lofty aspirations of shooting an elk in 2022, and a moose at some point in the future. 300 WM is at the top of my list. I've shot my dad's and it seems that with a heavy rifle and the loads he has worked up, the recoil is quite manageable. Has anyone shot a deer with copper monolithic bullets out of a 300?
 
Just the killing power of the 300 is why I love them. It's basically the only caliper I've not tracked wounded deer. I'm not sure if you'd see any performance benefit of shooting pure copper bullets out of a 300.

I've shot a few deer with my 300 wsm, and barnes 168TTSX. Complete passthru and not any more meat loss than my 270 win. I"ve shot several elk with the same bullet and all but 1 shots have been passthru's, even when i hit one in the antler ;)

Why is everybody talking about the kick ?? Try shooting a 45-70 without a buttplate then tell me the 300 kicks more . I still have my Marlin 1895 45-70 shooting with the 300 gr. hollow point but can't get it out really like my Ruger M77 7mm mag.

I agree I think that shooting my Benelli SBE 2 with 2 3/4"Winchester Partition Gold slugs kicks worse than my .300. and every single 3" turkey load is worse.

He said it doesn't. He shot the first deer and an hour later, wanted to shoot another. He loves shooting it. I let him shoot my 10 gauge for the 1st time Sunday. He shot it one time and looked at me with eyes big as saucers and said give me the shells! This is mine now!

It will shoot 1/2 MOA out to 300 yards and it's a pleasure to shoot. I don't use it for southern whitetails, but it's going on a moose hunt this fall. The outfitter told me the 300 wm was the right gun for this hunt.

I think i have the same scope on mine but it is a PST maybe. I do not have a muzzle break. We'll see how this goes. :eek: I weigh 235ish though, so I have some meat on my bones so to speak.

Do you know of Chuck Hawks? He writes a lot of stuff about guns. Maybe you can do a search and find Hawks' article entitled; "The Optimum .30 Caliber Rifle Cartridge".
He concludes that the old, venerable .30-06 is the ultimate .30 caliber rifle cartridge and he gives his reasoning. I agree with him. I believe the .30-06 can do just about anything any of the .300 magnums can, and do it with less recoil and less expensive ammo. The .30-06 might have a little less range than a .300 magnum, but I consider any shot over 300 yards to just be sniping and not hunting. Either one; .308 or .30-06 is all that I need for any big game found in North America except the big brown and polar bears. And, for them I would want a .338 Win Mag. as a minimum.
But, I understand if you "just want one". ():~)
 
I own a couple of Patriots and am very happy with them. I just bought a Savage Hog Hunter 338 Win Mag (thought I was buying a 338 Federal) and it is a long range hunter. With a muzzle brake its a fluffy kittens cat to shoot. Plus it has a bullet range from 160 gr through 250 grain. So you can practice on TN whitetails for that western Mule deer or Elk hunt with no problem. And who knows you could score the TN Elk hunt some day too. I have a 300 WSM in a TIka, great rifle, but I agree with the previous writer, really its just a slightly souped up 30.06, even with 200 gr. bullets.

Straight wall cartridges have more of a push recoil, where tapered wall has a quick snap recoil. Try some Hornady lever evolution in that 1895, mine holds 1 1/2" at a hundred yards all day and 325 grain FTX puts em down quick..
