I'm not an online subscriber so don't know how to post the pic from today's Tennesseean. It shows an angler identified as Andrew Whitehead holding a huge 17" black crappie, and says he caught it from the bank. Wow, how cool is that? Look it up, but maybe someone will post it.

She looks pretty dang fat and full of eggs, but I agree it's hard to believe it weighed quite that much. Big fish, nonetheless.

That's a FINE crappie!

Somewhere (packed from moving) I have a pic of an 18" crappie that I caught in Pickwick back about 1999 and it would have probably weighed a little over 3lbs but nowhere near 4.

I catch 2-2.5lb 14" crappie on priest, why couldn't a 17" weigh 3.8?? The crappie on priest are healthy to say the least..

Put a 14" crappie on a scale, and take a picture for me next time you get one that 2.5. Then I will belive you. I literally just cleaned 5 14" crappie and the fattest might have gone 1.75. Might.

No offense but im not worried about you believing me.. Your sample size of 5 fish that maybe weighed 1.75 doesn't mean that a 14" fish "can't" weigh that much..

Weight/length estimator puts a 17" crappie at 3.2 pounds for an average. Fill it full of eggs and I wouldn't think 3.8 pounds would be unrealistic.

What an awesome fish. Congrats to Andrew Whitehead.

Just an FYI, but 14" black crappie average 1.7 pounds according to the weight/length estimator. I wouldn't think 2.5 pounds would be unrealistic either.

It is possible for a 17" fish to go over 3 lbs. i know crappie tend to be thin but if that fish was full of eggs and thick, 3.8 is possible. No matter what it weighed it looked to be an outstanding crappie.
