Hey guys I have a yote problem on my property, I was thinking about trying to thin some out in the next couple of weeks...I dont have a huge aresnal...30-30, 30-06, 20 ga, muzzleloader and .22...I was thinking about purchasing a scope and hunting them with the .22 lr? any suggestions? Is this unethical, or is a .22 potent enough to hunt them with?. Thanks for the advice

If they are close enough for you to hit them in the head it would probably kill them.
I would say they would have to be within 50 yards or so, but this is just a guess.

As for using any of the other choices you listed, remember that if you go out for the sole purpose of coyote hunting during deer season, you MUST USE WHAT IS LEGAL FOR DEER. For example if the only legal weapon open is bow for deer, you have to hunt coyote with a bow (or rimfire or shotgun with legal size shot, that I don't recall offhand what it is).

Right now wouldn't be a problem because rifle season is open but also remember you must comply with blaze orange laws.

Just some friendly fyi for ya, because there was a time I did not know that.

Thanks for the advice Ruger, I will be hunting in the woods, so I shouldnt have a longer shot than 50 yards, Ive got some nice pictures of some pretty big ones on my trail cam, I dont think anyone has ever tried to put a dent on them on our property, we used to have tons of qual and rabbits, they are almost non exsistent now. I would also like to look into trapping some of them

This time of year I woud get some 20 ga. Hevi shot #4, and you won't have to wear orange. Those Hevi #4 will turn a coyote inside out. As far as 22 lr I wouldn't be scared to shoot one with it. It may run a ways

I like 40gr velocitors for coyotes. They will usually make it about 50yds then fall over with chest shots. Just make good accurate shots under 100yds and you'll kill a bunch. Obviously head shots require less tracking.

You could kill one with a .22. I know the .30-06 is a large round. But, since you are only interested in thinning the population (and not saving any fur), the .30-06 would be my choice. Last thing you need is a bunch of wounded coyotes running around. Shotgun with the right load may be a good choice if shorter shots present themselves. Then again, 30-30 is a good brush gun. Try with em all!

I will be there next week- Rutherford county edge of Bedford county trying to do something about the yotes and wild dogs giving my parents goats hell. Plan on using a 5.56 bolt gun loaded up with some Hornady V-Max handloads. Be glad to come by and hunt them with you as well if you like.

In addition to the blaze orange, you also have to have the proper big game license if you are using centerfire. You have to be a legal big game hunter.

Be aware that if you are a nonresident as listed in your profile, that you will need the all game license and blaze orange to be legal.
