For a knock around, don't care if I scratch it type rifle I'd take a hard look at a Ruger American. That said I love my 799 Mini Mauser in 22/250.

Reason why I purchased a 22/250 was to decimate the coyote population. Mine is a Browning A-Bolt and is just plain accurate with just about anything 60 grains and under. The standard twist is 1 in 14 and above 60 I keyhole like crazy, can't keep on paper at 50 yards.

The Ruger American is getting great press. There are some bargains running around as store shelves start to back up with unsold inventory. I'd love an X-Bolt.

RL15 is what I've had great success with along with Superformance but it is dirty. I never tried Varget. 52 and 55 grain bullets are deadly as is the 60 grain Partition.

Brass is hard to come by unless you spring for the Norma/Nosler ones.

Dave, Savage offers a model 12 with a 1:9 twist now. Back about 30 years ago, I had a Savage 110 with a 26" Hart barrel 1:9 on a choate stock. That was back before the days of laser range finders. But I killed coyotes with that rig well out to 600 yards. My favorite load was a 55gr. NOSLER Bt over 40.grs of H380. Be aware that load is over most manuals MAX. Won a couple of local 100 yard BR matches with it to boot. You could hit a crow with it at quarter of a mile and find nothing but bloody feathers were it sat

I picked up a Savage Axis a while back in 22-250. I've heard all the negative remarks about how cheaply they are made, but after shooting a few rnds @ 100 yds and holding 1/2" groups, or just out, with a less than ideal rest taken, and factory 55 gr ammo, I do believe it has potential. I too picked up this rifle with the intentions of yote huntin.

I acquired a TC Venture a while back in 22-250. It seems to shoot really well for an inexpensive rifle. I have the weather shield version so I don't have to worry as much about wet and mud which is what my land looks like about 11 months of the year.

A Tikka T3 Lite Stainless in 22-250 would be an awesome calling rifle. I have a Savage 116 weather warrior in stainless that has piled up a lot of fur over the years.
