2018 Season mounts

I will kick it off. Here is a super nice velvet buck I just finished up. I used a burr to burr incision because this dude had little to no hair and I did t want to try and hide it.
Antlers were freeze dried.

No hair on ears either.

Good job on that velvet buck. I'm hearing that in the long run it's better to strip off the velvet and use the artificial velvet. What would you suggest?

As for preserving the velvet I believe just about anything will work. I found a velvet antler turkey hunting in KS one year that was from the previous season and the velvet was still attached. It didn't look good, granted.

Now what works best or looks best? I've tanned them in a submersible solution and freeze dried, I suspect the freeze drying is better simply by how the process works. Tanning (or injection) works good too and is much cheaper but it's night and day difference in how looks with the freeze dry looking superior. It just has a softer look to.

I just think artificial velvet looks...well artificial. Sometimes it's your only option and I get to that.
I need to look hard at artificial options and see what the cost on high quality is, I suspect it's very pricey.

Artificial should eliminate any chance of bugs so that's a plus.

Just finished up a beautiful 150" local Montgomery county deer. His cape was in very good shape, the color was very pleasing and his heavy antlers are just awesome. Let's face it, some deer are simply more pretty than others and this one is handsome all the way around.

Finally got around to taking some decent pics of my daughters juvenile buck. AT Hiker did a awesome job on the mount. This buck was a scraper, notice all the scars on his cape.
