Just got back into a bass boat. Whew! However the power trim will sometimes go all the way up/down and sometimes half before 3-4 inches after the 1st time. After a couple minutes (As if cooled)it does the same thing.

To me it sounds like the up/down relays may be gettting hot and breaking down. I cant find a schematic... so does anyone know if the relays hang on the side of block (starboard)?

Anybody else had similar experience?

Wanting to take it out this weekend. Any input would be helpfull. Thanks for your help.

Is this the schematic you are looking for? Unfortunately, they don't give you a schematic for the pump itself. I think they assume that you just buy a new one when it goes out. I have never owned an XR2 but I have owned several mercury's from that time period and the trim pump was a seperate unit in the boat with hydralic lines run to the motor. It may be different in yours, I don't know.

If you take it out and the motor gets stuck in the up position which has happened to me, there is a release valve on the pump to let the motor down. This is providing the pump is in the boat. Unfortunately, it did not work for me and I had a slow trip back to the dock. If yours has the pump in the boat, I would check the fluid levels and make sure that release valve works. Your issue might be that your hydrolic fluid is low.

I agree with Jim. Check the hydraulic fluid. I had a 1986 Merc and the tilt/trim acted a fool if it got low. Look up the procedure for checking/adding. The motor needs to be in a certain position.
