HMR, WSM or Hornet. I believe this to be my next purchase. Favoring the HMR but not set as of now, how would you build or what would you purchase as is? At a budget friendly 500 or less minus optics and bases/rings, what would you choose and why? I realize 500 is minimal but can't personally justify more on this particular round. If all else, anyone running CZs 17/22 combo? Thoughts?

To have the most accurate 17 possible in said price range

Being a handloader, I'd go with the 17 Hornet. It would be cheaper to shoot and once you get your hands on a bunch of components you don't have to worry about running all over creation to find ammo. Besides, a 17 doesn't have anything but velocity, so the biggest case is going to win that contest everytime. Until you go too far and go up to the 17 Remington. I have one and while I suppose it's OK, I sort of wish I had ordered a 223 or 22-250 instead in that 700 Varmint synthetic. The 17Remington is a finicky little bugger.

I have had a few of the HMR's the most accurate was a Marlin 917V followed by a Savage 93R17BTVSS but both would keep 5 shots inside an inch at 100yds as long as there was no wind. If I was going to buy a new one today it would be a Marlin but I don't have anything bad to say about the Savages either. Just remember that very little wind will really screw up groups with the 17HMR.

257W brings up a good point. The 17 is fine for a lot of applications but it is hyper-sensitive to wind and that is wind in any direction.

My BIL has one and this guy is really penny conscious (cheap). He got rid of it, too sensitive to wind, and his problem was a wind right directly in to you.

Still, the 17 is good for what it does but beware the wind.

I've shot a Marlin 17 and that's what has intrigued me with this caliber. However before starting this post I had obviously missed the thought of wind problems..
On to considering the next caliber I suppose. :bash:
