Killed this guy on my family farm last night right at the end of legal shooting light. I had actually seen him from the road Thursday and Friday afternoon on the way to my mom's house to pick my kids up. It was almost dark both nights and I actually thought he was a mature 8 that has spent the last two summers in and around that field but seems to disappear every August. I hunted him
Saturday morning hoping to catch him returning to his bed right after daylight with no luck. Went back late yesterday afternoon and he stepped out about 5 minutes before legal light ended. I let him work his way up the field as far as I could before taking the shot as legal light was ending. I honestly thought I missed him and was sick to my stomach when my buddies and I went down the field edge looking for him. No blood and no sign of a hit. Fortunately my cousin had it in his mind that the deer was dead and eased off into the grass field the deer was bedding in and walked right up on him. I'm not sure what surprised me more…that I had actually made a great shot and killed the deer or that he was a mature 10 point instead of the 8 I thought I was shooting. Every buck is special but there's just something about killing one of the land I grew up on that makes it even sweeter.
