A very cold and rainy morning on the Harpeth didn't stop them from biting. Three of us landed fish over 2 lbs. this smallmouth was 3lbs 5oz. Caught it on a crawfish crankbait I rescued from a tree a couple weeks ago. For the release video in slow motion, follow me on Instagram at robertladd.

Very nice fish, congrats. My pb came from the harpeth a couple years ago. I caught a small one and 2 spots on the harpeth yesterday, didn't fish for very long though. They were all full of eggs

That's a good Smallie anywhere but especially on the Harpeth! I know that river is full of them but from what I gather, not much size to speak of. Congrats!
They are in there, but tough to figure out and even harder to land!!

I used to live right on the harpeth in grassland and would fish it four or five times a week. The first year I lived there I couldn't really figure them out. After a year or two of losing BIG smallies, I changed my tactics, gear, and learned the more productive water and patterns of the fish. Sometimes the giant smallies will be in spots you wouldn't expect such as heavily fished areas and main access points. Floating the river was the least productive for me as far as big fish cause more often than not it took lots of time in one hole to pizz em off enough to get them to smash it. Fish aggressively and don't think just cause you've casted in the same spot 100 times that the 101st cast won't be when she flies out and drills it. For the last three years I lived in the area, I was able to land several MONSTER smallmouth a year.. 22-23"+ fish with some weighing over 5, 5 1/2lbs!! No crap!!
The bigger smallmouth in the harpeth are some of the hardest fighting, and high flying fish (as far as bass) I've ever caught. They will put your gear to the test!!
Oh yeah, btw great fish!!!

Nice fish. I caught my share of fish years ago fishing the harpeth. It sure is fun having one jump head high 20ft in front of you.
Congrats.

you out of your mind, there's no big smallmouth in the harpeth, they only get to be 10 inches and then all the parade of canoeists and kayakers come in from all the new access points in franklin and slaughter all the fish....

Yeah but Jonathan can't catch the big smallies like I used to!! :tu:
Kinda hard to catch good bass when your carp fishing! Lol I did lots of carp fishing out there myself but I used an arrow. Hahaha

lol yea. There are a few nice smallies in the harpeth. I don't like how it's becoming a tourist attraction in Franklin. They're building all kinds of new canoe access points and river mile markers and what not.

the carp get bigger but the smallmouth taste better...I like em both... I have this new attractant from the UK for carp that I can't wait to try.
