I've been putting out dry cat food and a mini marshmallow. This past run, it was dry cat food and a sliver of peanut butter on the pull lever. We shall see

Had planned on buying some Z-traps(push/pull) and drug my feet on it. Looked around online yesterday & most are out of stock. The few I found were $25 ea!
I couldn't find any before Christmas. All sold out.

Question for the z-trap folks. I've always worried about catching a house cat. We have a few roaming around I'd prefer not to catch

I have never caught a skunk and I am glad I haven't, Lol. I have only used mini marshmallows which seems to work well on racoons. The peanut butter on the lever sounds like a nice touch to attract some visitors and make them pull the lever for sure.

Typically you won't catch many skunks or opossums if you don't use a fish type bait.

Yep, I had read that somewhere before I started, I have caught a couple of possums with the Marshmallows. I had put some vanilla extract on that bunch don't know if that had anything to do with it or just coincidence.

For the ones having trouble with critters getting away put these in the bottoms of your DP trap. It will greatly increase your catch numbers.

Skunks seem to like sweets. I definitely get the pucker factor when I get too close to them without seeing them. I actually hate when they're in the traps. Even when shot, I'll go check other traps just to give him extra time 🤣. Just being around them I can smell myself for days
Shoot them thru the lungs & they can't spray

I bought 15 from Southern Snare and Supply back in the summer for I believe $13 a piece. Like you said they are out of stock but Northern Sports Co. online has some for $15. I'd call them tomorrow to double check but they say "in stock"

It is Possible but not likely. I have caught 1 house cat in a DP in 8 years of trapping. Released unharmed. Limped around until full circulation was restored (5 minutes or so) then it followed me around for 10 minutes looking for a hand out.

I use a .22 short hollow point on them, killed 6-7 last year with nary a spray. Haven't got my traps out yet this year... Slacking
I carry a .22 pistol for running traps, but I can't hit anything with a pistol farther than about 6' 🤣. I just put a laser on it so that helps some. But I also carry a .17 for reaching out, which may be too much and cause him to spray. The .17 stays on the golf cart for skunks, armadillos and coyotes. I just took it off for the first time in months to clean it.

Will definitely try a lung shot on the next one though for sure. I'm 100% on them spraying with head shots

I've got a little breakdown Browning that only shoots shorts, so that's what I use since I'm such a lousy pistol shot. The first skunk I tried the lung shot on I missed 3 times! Wasn't convinced that it was going to work & I was already running away when pulling trigger 🤣

A first for me. Did my check yesterday and one of my Z traps was gone! Anchor hardware was all there but the trap was gone from the chain up. The chains on most DP's are kinda light, so either change out the chains or inspect them regularly. Best I can figure is I had a big coon and he was able to twist it up enough to get leverage on a weak link.
