Over the last few years I have learned to watch my wind more while hunting. This past weekend I had a weird wind but hunted my favorite spot anyways. It was blowing from my back into the field I was hunting but what I didn't know until I got up into the stand was that yes it was blowing from my back into the field BUT! It was raising up, so my question to everyone! Would you still hunt if the wind is blowing the wrong way but it is raising up? Do you think it matters?

Yes is matters BUT, The majority of scenarios I hunt deer come in from multiple directions. I was playing the wind last weekend and had four does come in exactly where I though they would ...in front of me...and then... I had 4 bucks come in from behind me.... From down wind. I must have just been high enough for my scent stream to be above their nose...point is... you never know. Another fact...this is Tennessee and this is Fall...winds may change several directions while you are on stand. You can only effectively play the wind when you "Know" deer are traveling in a specific direction....So in short..do all you can do to control your scent, climb as high as you comfortably can....and hunt...

I have to say, that hunting with regards to thermal movement has greatly improved my success rate. Also, thermal movement has prompted me to hunt stands that, in the past , I would have never hunted with a certain wind direction. As in one stand loc I have that is on a N facing slope...conventional wisdom always told me to hunt it with a N wind...but as thermals lift up in the morning, I decided to try hunting that stand, mornings only btw, with a southerly wind direction. My thinking was that my scent would be carried higher than the lower terrain below me, and thermal action would keep it flowing higher, thus keep the entire area in front of me "scent free". I've had great results since this revelation. ;)
