Who hunts with an AR?

Thinking about an upcoming ar build I was curious about what calibers do you all hunt with on your platform. Just looking for some ideas

I killed one last year with my 223 and one this year with my 308, give it a try and have fun. Good hunting.

I killed a doe with mine with the Winchester 223 all copper hog bullets,i think they are too hard if you don't hit the shoulder, I shot high and clipped the back bone and it was a pass thru with little expansion. taking it back out this morning with the 62g sp looking for a buck.

Use one for hogs. Never for deer.

I don't have one, but I say one in the 308 cal would be the way to go. I did look at one in that cal, but could not justify buying it.

The AR platform is quick to aquire a target, and offers fast follow up shots. To me that is geared more to predator hunting than deer.

There are alot of caliber choices. For the AR15 platform I would go with 223, 7.62x39, or 300 blackout. AR10 (308) would be a good choice but are more pricey and are not as diverse as the AR15 platform.

I have killed one 6pt with my .223, put a heart shot on him and he ran maybe 50yards.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. Naturally a 308 would be the best choice but as noted it is somewhat cost prohibitive. An AR 15 in 223 with a separate 300 blackout upper may be the best bet. How far out would you trust a 223 for deer? I do have my 308 bolt gun for long range so I if I could make clean kill shots out to 150 yards with a 223 that would be very tempting.

I can't believe the advancements in ammo that we are discussing taking a deer with a .22 cal bullet from the old stand bys .30 (30-30, 30-06, and .308).

Put a 5 round mag and a good scope on it, loaded up some wicked good hunting ammo, I'm ready. :cool:

They are nice looking but expensive and the only hunting purpose I would use one for is hogs where I would want a lot of shots at a pack of critters. At deer I want one good first shot and I usually don't get a second shot so a bolt action is a good choice for me. Are they still heavy? I do want one but not sure what I would do with it - I wish I had a place to hunt hogs, then I could buy an AR and have a blast!

heck i have killed 3 back to back to back with a single shot son i dont us an ar for an advantage of mutiple shots

however in ar platform .223

I've never been a big fan of off calibers, how's the 6.8 look as far as future availability. This won't be a round that will fizzle out in a few years is it?

I don't see it fizzling out. And its readily available from what I've seen. I have an AR in 223 but have never hunted with it. Wouldn't have a problem doing so but it's just not my hunting rifle. I wouldn't have a problem hunting with any of the calibers I stated above. If I were to switch to a different upper for hunting with my AR it would be one of those, most likely the 300 or 6.8.

You could also get a 450 Bushmaster or 50 Beowulf upper.

The exit hole is just as small as the entrance. The blood trail is very sparse and sometimes it would just end. I started borrowing my brother's 30-06 when he stopped hunting for a few years, and then i decided it was time to buy a new rifle. Just didn't seem like a good bullet for expansion to me.

Never have used a 7.62 to hunt but have heard good things from those who do. From what I've been told it performs like a 30-30. Did you try different kinds of bullets?

I cannot remember the brand, but was always bought at wal-mart at the time that was about the only store that sold hunting items in my area. I dunno maybe a bad brand or just bad luck on my part. Once i stopped using it my troubles disappeared.

I agree. I've heard it performs like a 30-30 (not sure how true this is because I've never hunted with either).
