We did. This is our first time to Wyoming. We just put in for the speed goats. Area 72. I'm pumped! :D

I did not get drawn for my first or 2nd choice. Trying to figure out a backup plan.
Me too! However, I only put in for one choice, so at least I got a point out of the deal. Plus I get my special license $556 back, or at least most of it.

The unit has lots of walk in stuff, but it is checkboarded all over the place. We were coming back from Yellowstone last fall and turned off US 26 at Powder River into the unit. Very bleak and dry with few antelope showing. EXCEPTION: There was a "no hunting" green field, wheat I think, on which every antelope in the country was milling around. Hint: If I were hunting in 72 this year, I would find a ranch (private property) with green fields. That's where the forage is that time of year, and that's where the antelope are. Good Luck

Oh man..Very few antelope! That don't sound too good. Especially for first timers..I was looking at the walk in stuff, and it looked like there would be several thousand acres to hunt. Dang.
My buds are gonna shoot me if we can't get something, I was the one who set it up & talked them into it!

I'm hesitant even to comment, particularly to first timers, because the last thing that
I want to do is discourage someone who is pumped up because they drew a tag. I saw plenty of antelope. Its just that they were you would expect them to be, given a choice, on a green field where the groceries were rather than on sparse dry prairie grass. They have to come and go into the green fields(they don't spend 24/7 there) and they have to drink every day! I assume that you are staying in Casper. Just get you the BLM maps, locate where the public or walk in areas are, and drive every road in the unit determining where you can and cannot hunt. You guys will kill goats if you put in the effort.

First, I want to say thanks for the info.
Yes, we are going to stay in Casper. There will be 6 of us in 2 trucks. Are there any other maps we should get other than the blm maps? Thanks again for the help, and it sounds a little better now. I just bought a book called "The Big Game Hunter's Guide To Wyoming". It is supposed to have a lot of helpful info on each unit and stuff. I hope so!

The updated walk in information, unit maps, etc. are supposed to be on the Wyoming Game and Fish website July 1st(according to the site info this morning). When they are available copy them. IMO those and the BLM maps are all that you need to become a unit 72 expert! Good Luck.

You might want to check out Butch Manasse Outdoor Adventures website. They are located in Cheyenne and are basically hunt brokers. They offer(or did in their 2010 online catalog) a trepass fee ranch hunt in 72 at $695(2010) a pop. If you guys aren't prospects for that type of thing, at least it is something to explore and enjoy reading.
