i have never even killed a squirrel with a shotgun. i will go with a 22, actually a couple different ones

I hate it when I bite into a piece of shot when eating squirrel. A .22 rifle is my choice. It adds another dinemsion to the sport. If you're going to get a mess of squirrels with a rifle, you've got to use stealth. If the squirrel discovers your presense, you're likely to not get a shot. A .22 just puts more "hunt" into the outing. I've bagged many a squirrel with a shotgun, buy my favorite is the .22. I think the .22 is also more humane. Most of my kills are quick. With a shotgun, they tend to crawl around a lot before they die. But that's just me. To each his own.

I agree hickory nut, nothing against scattergun hunters, but like the skill challenge that is needed in hunting with a 22. I also think you can higher numbers with a 22 due to less disturbance.

lots of times we will hunt in tandem, one with a shotgun and one with a rifle. sitting shots belong to the rifleman, runners go to the shotgunner.

I will start the morning with a Savage .22. If it goes south, I'll have a Stevens 311 16 gauge in the truck. I've been to every opening morning with my grandfather since I was 12...I don't intend to lose this year. ;^)

edit: for those wondering, I'm 31.
