Looking for some scaley bark hickory nuts. Don't mind driving a ways to get them. I used to have a place I could pick up a bunch but that tree is gone.
Sounds like them. I googled "scaly bark" and it came back shagbark. Squirrels been hitting them pretty hard here.Probably the same. Most are tall, straight trees. The bark is loose and hanging in strips. The nuts are small, about the size of a quarter.
Uhhh MUP why do you have someone else's nuts in your hand…..View attachment 198812

WOW! 108" diameter is freaking HUGE! That's 9 feet through!I have the largest shaggy bark hickory that I, personally, have ever seen on my property. We measured it close to 10 years ago and it was 108" in diameter. Researching the growth of trees showed that it was a seedling when the American Revolution broke out.
OOPS!!!!! Circumference is the correct term for the measurement for my treeWOW! 108" diameter is freaking HUGE! That's 9 feet through!
Ok. I find that more realistic. That'd be more like 34-35" diameter. That's a big hickory, for sure. I have seen them that big. But 9 feet…I was like, holy crap! I wanted to see that tree!OOPS!!!!! Circumference is the correct term for the measurement for my tree
Whatcha gonna do with them? I talked to an old timer a few years ago who was picking them up on the side of the road. He said he'd been getting them from under that same tree for 40 years to make cakes with. He said a hickory nut cake was way better than a walnut cake.Looking for some scaley bark hickory nuts.
