Turnips

I have decided to put out a strip of turnips in my clover field. When is the best time to plant them?

I would say anytime from August on, as long as you have some soil moisture or some on the way. It can get really dry and hot from now on, so the later the better I guess.

Just remember, since the fall months are our driest months, DON'T plant by specific dates. Plant by soil moisture. If soil moisture is not adequate at planting, you're throwing your seed money down a rat hole.

Planted mine 2 weeks ago. Looked at them yesterday and most was ankle high. Been raining on them aout every 2 or 3 days and they look good. If it turns dry I will pump water out of creek there next to and keep them watered.

i would do sept but you can from august on. A friend of mine planted about a 3 acre patch last fall and the deer didnt touch them until after season and then in Jan they hit them like a hog hits a slop trough! and tore them up!!!!

We planted 2 plots last year and the deer didn't seem to have much to do with them at all.

I planted them three years in a roll. The first year they started eating them after a couple of frost. The last year they started eating them as soon as they started growing.

First time I planted them they didn touch them till end if Dec or first of Jan. But when they started eating they didn stop till it was gone, which was just a couple days. But since them they seem to nibble on them from the start. Then end od Dec. they wipe them out.

Try planting some type of rape mixed in with the turnips. After the first heavy frost the deer will be there till they are gone.

I had considered planting clover in with it. I bought the turnip seed this weekend. Seed cost about $2 per acre.

Will rape be planted the same way as the turnips? Disk, scatter and cover?
