Triple 7

For 777 I have seen some people say not to use 3 pellets(150gr charge) while others swear by it. I never thought of it really till the other day. I looked in my pellet box and didn't see anything about the use of three pellets. What say you?

What Model70Man says. In deer hunting with a muzzle loader you more that likely won't get a second shot.

Thanks for the post ewc about BH209 being a smokeless powder. I did not know that. I'm sure it's safe for ML uses at reasonable charges, but I for one will not be using it. I'll stick to 777 pellets.

What is the big deal with the crud ring with 777?

I am not answering for ewc but I can relate a situation that happened to me.

I was at the range and shooting my regular load of 110 gr of loose Triple 7 and a 250 gr Shockwave. I had shot 4 shots and on the very next reload got a sabot and bullet stuck...stuck hard about 2 inches from being seated onto the powder. Good thing my ram rod was witness marked for that load or I might not have known. That my friend is how terrible things happen to muzzleloaders and body parts.

The crud ring is a build up of residue from the Triple 7 that occurs just in front of where the bullet sits when the gun is loaded. I have a Knight DISC and after 3 shots with Triple 7 if I don't swab out the bore the next bullet down the muzzle may or may not make it past the crud ring.

One way to combat the crud ring is to spit patch between shots. This is not a bad idea anyways because it keeps the bore consistent between shots. As the crud ring builds up you also get increased pressure due to the slight bore obstruction. This will increase velocity because of the higher pressure. Not good for accuracy.

I am not Triple 7 bashing as I have used it for about 7 years and I liked the speed it gave. Now that BH209 is here it is all I use in the Knight. No more crud ring. No more spit patching. Just shoot, reload, shoot again. More speed. Powder holds constancy from year to year unlike Triple 7 that looses energy the longer it's been opened. BH209 just does away with all those problems. Also, BH209 does not negate the need to clean your gun. It will need to be cleaned after a range session just use regular old Hoppes or any decent gun cleaning solvent.

I know what the crud ring is. I just don't get what the big deal is about it? If you know you get a crud ring, hunt with a clean bore and go hunting. No big deal.
