Read some unfavorable comments on another post as to the reliability of Pyrodex. What do you guys think of triple 7 in an inline gun?

I liked Triple7, with the exception of the crud ring it left near the breech. It is a lot better than Pyrodex in my opinion.

BlackHorn 209 is all I use now.

I have had no problems with the reliability of any of the Subs I have tried. Between them I like the Triple 7 over the Pyrodex and prefer loose 3f to any pellets in any of them. BUT the Blackhorn 209 is by far better than any of the others.

shot some for the 1st time yesterday and the only trouble I see is now I will have 1 1/2 boxes of 45 caliber 777 pellets taking up space in my ml box.

I've been using 777 for about 3 years and now that ratsnakeboogy mentioned it, I get this crazy buildup just above the bullet seating point. It makes the bullet very hard to seated. I've tryed cleaning between shots, but the buildup takes a lot of scrubbing with a brush and the breech plug removed. If I don't get the bullet seated correctly, I'd be lucky to hit the broad side of a barn. I'm about out of the 777, so I'm thinking of trying the bh209 next.

No body ever try that American Pioneer?Whats not good about it?I've used Triple 7 for yrs now in the loose powder,It does ok.I guess I am going to have to try that BH209 and see how it does.

I tried everything to get the crud ring to stop forming, hotter primer, cooler primer, muzzleloader primer, patching between shots, nothing worked. At load 3 or 4 it became unsafe to go any further, the sabot/bullet would not seat on the powder and air space between the two equals very bad things. It did this loose or pellet, didn't matter. No crud with BH209, I can load 20 shots without cleaning, no issues. It's worth the extra dollars to me anyway.

I am a casual MZL shooter(hunter) at best. However, I experienced the crud ring just below the muzzle with Pyrodex, triple 7 and American Pioneer. I believed what Jim Shockey said about a thousand shots without cleaning with American Pioneer, but the only difference that I found with that powder over the other two was the fouling being white instead of black! I threw away about half of the canister since it did not do as advertised in my gun. I have always used loose powder as opposed to pellets, but 4 or 5 shots before cleaning have always been the max that I can expect, and after 3 shots, the sabot and bullet seat very hard until the crud ring is passed, and then easier for the balance of the seating.

Nothing at all really,it is a-lot cleaner than Pryodex or T-7 but ain't got the power of the T-7 to me though.Based on a group fired with both at the same charge wiehts from 2 different ML the T-7 shot 2-3 higher and with more felt re-coil both signs of higher velocitys.

I tried the Jim Shockey gold one time and I threw a jug away 3/4 full. That stuff was horrible. Would not pattern and could not get a consitant load size with the large grains. It is junk. Don't buy into Jim staking his life on it. He is getting paid well for his name use I am sure.

I like the loose triple7,but I am going to try the BH209.Most seem to like it real well.I guess I'll have to go to a hotter 209 primer too

I got some of the BH209 yesterday. Gander Mountian, $35 for 10 oz., 777 was $25 for 16 oz. If it's as clean as everyone says, it'll be worth it to me.

you will not regret it,three patches and its clean, you can shoot the whole bottle with out cleaning inbetween ,it has no build so accuraccy does not suffer

So glad I quit that. $35 for 10 oz is nuts-

Oh, just so you guys know, BH209 is a smokeless powder. Please measure your speed with a chronograph.

There is no free ride. You don't get the speed they are advertising without the pressure.

Happy Thanksgiving-

still fast enough to kill them and without a crud ring good enough for me,and happy turkey day to you

Oh, I guess you do not know.

Let me be clear, BH209 is a smokeless powder - marketed to muzzleloaders. Safe? I have no clue - cause I've not shot it and won't.

Measure your speed and post it here. I can give you a guess on pressure.

Good luck-

Thanks for the post ewc about BH209 being a smokeless powder. I did not know that. I'm sure it's safe for ML uses at reasonable charges, but I for one will not be using it. I'll stick to 777 pellets.

What is the big deal with the crud ring with 777?

I am not answering for ewc but I can relate a situation that happened to me.

I was at the range and shooting my regular load of 110 gr of loose Triple 7 and a 250 gr Shockwave. I had shot 4 shots and on the very next reload got a sabot and bullet stuck...stuck hard about 2 inches from being seated onto the powder. Good thing my ram rod was witness marked for that load or I might not have known. That my friend is how terrible things happen to muzzleloaders and body parts.

The crud ring is a build up of residue from the Triple 7 that occurs just in front of where the bullet sits when the gun is loaded. I have a Knight DISC and after 3 shots with Triple 7 if I don't swab out the bore the next bullet down the muzzle may or may not make it past the crud ring.

One way to combat the crud ring is to spit patch between shots. This is not a bad idea anyways because it keeps the bore consistent between shots. As the crud ring builds up you also get increased pressure due to the slight bore obstruction. This will increase velocity because of the higher pressure. Not good for accuracy.

I am not Triple 7 bashing as I have used it for about 7 years and I liked the speed it gave. Now that BH209 is here it is all I use in the Knight. No more crud ring. No more spit patching. Just shoot, reload, shoot again. More speed. Powder holds constancy from year to year unlike Triple 7 that looses energy the longer it's been opened. BH209 just does away with all those problems. Also, BH209 does not negate the need to clean your gun. It will need to be cleaned after a range session just use regular old Hoppes or any decent gun cleaning solvent.

I know what the crud ring is. I just don't get what the big deal is about it? If you know you get a crud ring, hunt with a clean bore and go hunting. No big deal.
