For all of you guys that planted large #'s of trees esp pines etc did you use any tree tubes? I will be planting from seedlings but planting a large # of trees so i am debating on the most cost effective way to do it regarding tree tubes....

So i wanted to ask the people here who have done it, what did you do and where did you get them from?

Thanks

I'll go ahead and tell you to go ahead and get them

Me personally, have never planted pines.

BUT I have planted hundreds of Sawtooth oaks, Chinese Chesnuts, persimmon, apple, cherry, peach, pear, fruit cocktail and the tree tubes are a MUST!!!!!

You can ride around on our property and all the trees that are just planted arent hardly doing squat...BUT every tree we have a tube around are "boomin".

Not only do they hold in the little amount of moisture that there might be, they also protect the from being rubbed by bucks and everything else. They definately help! We order them from the NWTF

Tree tubes make a BIG difference in initial growth rates of fruit trees. They can make a tree grow fast enough to start producing fruit years ahead of a tree planted without a tree tube. They act as a mini greenhouse.

We did a test with fruit trees with some using no tubes or weed mats, some wih just weed mats, some with just tree tubes and some with weed mats and tree tubs. The trees with just tree tubes or both weed mats and tree tubes grew much faster than those without tree tubes.

Where did you guys order your tree tubes from? I was wanting to mix a few fruit trees in in a few places so that will help...

So are you guys saying no need for tree tubes on pines?

I get my tubes from the NWTF site.

You will loose some pines to deer, but most do not tube them. You might just plant a few extra if you think deer will be a problem.

I've never seen anyone use tree tubes for pines. Generally people are planting so many pines that tree tubes wouldn't be feasible.

yea bsk that was going to be my problem if you all said they were needed for pines because i plan to plant a whole lot and i was worried about buying tree tubes for them all....

but just for the fruit trees will be no problem... does anyone use certain places to get fruit trees like locally to you or does everyone order them off the net?

thanks again guys

I much prefer ordering if your talking apples. No nursery in TN offers a wide variety of disease resistant cultivars or rootstocks. For pears you can generally do well buying locally. Check out Adams County Nursery, Century Farms Orchards, Cummins Nursery, just to name a few. For other soft mast check out Edward Fort Nursery, the Wildlife Group, etc.

BSK, what variety of fruit trees have you had the most success with? Thanks.
