Last year I liver shot a button buck(completely thought it was a doe). It was the evening hunt and when I got my arrow it looked good. I waited about 30 mins. I saw the deer go in some over-grown thick stuff so I slowly walked in following a good blood trail. I always look up ahead when I am tracking just to see if I can find the deer earlier. I saw a set of eyes looking back at me bedded down so I backed out immediately. My brother was already on his way to help me with the deer. He got there about 30-45 minutes later. When we went back, the deer was still bedded and alive. We bumped it several times and he ended up bleeding out. Couple of questions: 1) How long should we have waited? 2) How do you know if it is liver blood and if you do know, should you give it several hours? This was a smaller deer and I am afraid if it was a big doe or buck, it might have run away the first time bumped never to be seen again on my property.

Not to worry about this, as if this was a bigger buck he would have chosen a place to bed roughly 100-200 miles from where you shot him

I usually give a liver shot deer 4 hours before trailing. They have to die from exsanguination (completely bleeding out till passing out) which can take a few hours. Push them before that and they can go a LONG way.
