I'm glad TWRA is being proactive in slowing its spread into our state. I wouldn't mind seeing them be a little more aggressive and stop the feeding of deer altogether.

I wonder if I can have my deer's glands tested while the meat sits in the freezer?

I think generally brain stems are collected for testing.

I found this on the WI DNR site:

"...the samples should be taken as soon as possible after harvest. The samples needed for CWD testing are located near the base of the deer's skull and first several inches of neck. If the head/neck is kept at a refrigerated temperature (35°F to 45°F) it can be taken to a sampling station up to five days after harvest. If the time between harvest and sampling will be longer, then the head should be frozen until it can be taken in. When removing the head, a hand-width length of neck needs to remain in order to obtain the proper samples..."

The TWRA was checking deer at the processor I use on opening day. They did the usual aging and other things, and asked my permission to remove lymph glands for CWD testing. I didn't understand why they needed my permission until I saw what had to be done. The lymph nodes were removed by cutting the throat so that they could get to the glands. It was a doe so I certainly didn't care but I can see where someone with a trophy buck would not want that done. I was also glad to learn that the TWRA is doing what it can to monitor for CWD.

I agree but I highly doubt it will ever happen.
An awful lot of people here not only wouldn't go for no feeding they are actively wanting baiting allowed.

I'm sure it will never be stopped, but I wish we could stop it from coming into our state. The best we can do is slow it down. I thank TWRA for they have and are doing in this matter. Educating and making people aware is half of the solution.

I read an article attributed to the Clarion Ledger that stated the genetic origins of the deer with CWD was a homegrown, Native MS deer...not an import as some suspected. Also, that they MDWFP was currently awaiting test results from 65 other samples in the area to see if other positive results presented.

Any update on your end Mega?
