Clover going into its 2nd Spring/Summer. Mix of many clovers, Ladino, Advantage, Patriot, Durana, and Imperial Clover, probably forgetting some. I topsowed 50 pounds of winter wheat into this past Fall right before a rain. These rains have really helped things. pH started at 5.5 here, but is now much better. Whole field looks just like this and is about 3/4 acre. Believe Ill mow it in the next week.

when you say top sow, did you drill it? We don't have a drill but I'd love to be able to get a decent stand of wheat going in the fall as the clover usually goes dormant during the winter

Nope no drill just threw it right into the clover with a broadcast spreader.

Looks great. I don't mess with clover much just bc I have such limited acres for plots and want prime attractants in and around the rut. Im mostly annuals but I do have some 30 yard wide paths that'll get perinial clover on them next winter.

what would be more prime?Mine get hit really hard most of the year,I over seed with wheat sometime during bow right before a rain.

just to make sure I understand, you are saying you simply broadcast wheat in your clover field during the fall and had pretty good germination? I always thought wheat would need more soil to seed contact, but if you had success then I'm going to try that this fall. From Dec. to end of season the clover is dormant and not much food for deer. 50 or 100 lbs. per acre?

Correct. I put 50 pounds on 3/4 acre. Did about that same rate on 3 different clover plots. Probably should have increased that alittle more to account for all the seeds that dont germ though. Sow it heavy I say.

I feel that annuals planted in early fall are more tender and thus more attractive and provide a greater draw during late October and November.

This is assuming you get the rain to germinate them and grow them unlike what happened this past season.

I plant some red clover in my mix but for my limited acreage I want it planted so it "peaks" in attractiveness around the rut. I don't think this is the case with spring planted clover.

Wheat will sprout on top of bare ground if the birds dont get it first.
