We've had more turkeys in 2023 than in years past. Prior to that, we were in a drastic decline. I suspect it's a combination of habitat improvements and heavy trapping
Last winter there was a flock of around 20. Not exclusively on my property they just came through now and again. After the breakup in early spring there were four. Late summer there were three. Last time I saw any there were two and that was a while ago. I do think someone locally is using corn. I hope that's the explanation.
We usually have very few gobblers in winter but tons of hens that never leave. Thus the gobblers come back each spring. Interesting to see how this year plays out.
After this past year and delayed season opener, I intentionally saved my last tag for the last weekend of the season. And I killed the 1 bird I couldn't kill for the past 2 seasons memorial day weekend.
But good grief, I've heard more gobbling this deer season than I ever have in years past. It's not numbers of birds... population is still way down from late 90s. But they are way more vocal this Nov/Dec than any year prior.
Saw 11 gobblers from my stand a few weeks ago!Took dog out last Sunday morning a 1 gobbled on hill in front of my house.I believe they are making a small comeback in my community!
Day length triggers strutting and gobbling especially in younger birds. Birds are also jockeying for social status this time of year. We had pictures for an hour last week of a group of birds fighting.
