I've never applied for any hunt. I'm ready to change some things up and try new stuff so i plan on applying for a few next year.

no there is only one entrance where you drive in and TWRA is set up next to the camping area. The island is a peninsula just looks like an island.jcooper81":2f4kqu68 said:Do you have to have a boat to get to the island?

id say your odds of killing a pope and young with a bow are much higher at PI than if you hunted most any other WMA every year for 10 years. In fact your pretty well guaranteed P&Y if you make a kill. I imagine 99.9% of the deer that are kllled make the books. Not arguing at all, just my opinion.PickettSFHunter":3k51r7b4 said:In the decade it takes to draw, you could surely kill a nice buck on another draw hunt. Also no assurance the hunt will continue since TWRA doesn't own the land. What about Ensely unit? How many points to draw that?

this is my thinking, I'm not gonna wait 10 years when I could hunt some draw hunts closer to home that I enjoy, and I am more likely to kill a giant somewhere here within the next 10 years, since we do have giants running around here too. Now I will be putting in for the PI doe hunt again, it was fun.PickettSFHunter":316hcy8n said:In the decade it takes to draw, you could surely kill a nice buck on another draw hunt. What's the success rate on the island? 3 days versus 10 whole seasons of hunting... And I dont care if it's public or private, I'd be happy to kill a P&Y anywhere, and it is very likely to happen in the next 10 years if I keep hunting the way I hunt...cbhunter":1ljgmqir said:id say your odds of killing a pope and young with a bow are much higher at PI than if you hunted most any other WMA every year for 10 years. maybe I misunderstood but I was thinking he meant other draw hunts which would be 3 days per year equal to 30 days hunting over 10 yrs vs 3 days at PI. Cat your an extremely effective hunter and better at your age than most people that have hunted their whole life. I commend you for that. You also hunt in a monster rich part of the state. I'd be tickled for you to kill a pope and young every year. But for the average hunter that don't get to put in the time and effort that you are blessed to do, I still think PI once every 10 years gives you an advantage over other draw hunts as far as taking a buck of a lifetimecatman529":14wb82zx said:What's the success rate on the island? 3 days versus 10 whole seasons of hunting... I guess I can see where some areas people don't have a shot at a good one, especially east TN. And the draw hunts I usually get aren't worth a crap for a big buck, I just enjoy hunting those places and would hate to give em up for 10 years. There are a lot of big bucks around where I live but maybe only 1/3 of my hunting is in this county and the rest is south on public land. I'd be more happy with a 120" on the WMA than a 140" on a private honey hole. And the public land produces a couple of really big deer every season. So maybe in the next 10 years, I might get a shot at one, if I ever figure out how to hunt bucks like I hunt does, lolcbhunter":3q5ecmsn said:maybe I misunderstood but I was thinking he meant other draw hunts which would be 3 days per year equal to 30 days hunting over 10 yrs vs 3 days at PI. deerfever":2cjnj1do said:Thanks for your response to my question crosshairy. I always wondered about that rule, the island only has one buck hunt per year with a bow so I agree with you the rule may not even be needed, but again I am just a deer hunter and know little about the biological standpoint of it all. I also agree with you in the fact that if you wait 8 to 10 years for the hunt you are probably not going to shoot a small buck . I will be driving 5 hours when i finally get the hunt and will be selective. Another question for you could 140 inch or better 8 pointers be dyeing of old age on the island because of the rule? I always wondered that. Thanks again for your response!
