The PI hunt thread.

I thought I would go ahead and make a thread so all of us members on the hunt could keep yall updated on our progress.
I'm sitting in line waiting to go in to scout. Spitdrum should be here in a few.
I didn't bring my 4 Wheeler due to some mechanical issues that came up with it. Hope that doesn't hinder me too much.
If anyone on here wants to send some last minute scouting location tips it would be appreciated.

As dry as it's been, it shouldn't be a problem getting around the island. Plenty of options for not hunting with a 4 wheeler since almost everyone will show up with one and drive a good ways as a result.

That is what I was thinking too. Have to park at the dirt pit or the cemetery. Only 2:45 min into the scouting and I have over 20,000 steps in. I was hoping to hunt pinch points but all the ones I had planed to hunt are several miles away.
I have found several oak trees which I heard did not exist on here. And even 2 big salt lick. Have found a few scrapes and rubs but nothing like I was expecting.

Oh and they are running a big pipe line through the Island too. Heavy equipment all and down through here.

I am sure that several of us Shelby County folks are willing to help. It looks like the north field that was washed out so bad in 2011 is a grass field now. I bet that would be a good spot now.

Well by 11am I said, screw this! Called my uncle and picked up his 4 wheeler tonight after I left from there at sun down.
Ended up walking 23,801 steps which is also 11.41 mi. My feet are killing me. Lol
Not near the sign I expected to see. Heard the same from most of the other hunters.
Spitdrum found something cool. I'll let him share that.
I did find 3 scrapes that were worked over this morning so I have my lock-on set up over looking them. Only seen 4 does today but did hear a few guys getting some sightings of bucks.

We also walked 543,764 miles and our feet, legs, knees, backs, and I'm sure other parts unknown til in the morning! I'm shacked up in Southaven right now bout to pass out and hope I roll out in the morning ha ha naw I'll be up!

did you tag it? :) Congrats on a great deadhead find! There will probably be 6 or 7 more of those out there to pick up for next year after this weekend, unfortunately. Good luck to all you guys on the hunt tomorrow, shoot straight, and keep us posted. It's THE best hunt in TN available to the average Joe.

Shoulda camped on the island... so easy to just wake up, make a pot of coffee and sammiches, then hit the stands. Fun to chat with the wardens at the checkin late into the evening as well. One of the highlights of my trip there was visiting with the TWRA staff. Absolutely quality people for sure!

I've been wanting to do that hunt for years but I never think to apply. A couple questions: How many years, on average, does it take to get drawn for the buck hunts? Also, are crossbows allowed? I hunt with a compound but my son will be hunting with a xbow until he's stronger- probably way before we'd get drawn anyway.

8-10 years I'm pretty sure. Got my first point this year. Start applying and we could possibly be on the same hunt. Yes crossbows are legal.

I personally watched buck after buck LEAVE the hunting areas when I was drawn several years ago during the scout day, when not an inch of this property goes untouched by all those stomping it out during scout day. I dont blame the hunters its the smart thing to do if everybody else is doing the same. Im just saying there would be a LOT MORE mature bucks killed if the scout day was a few days previous to the actual hunt.I know for a fact they pile out of there when the pressure hits. It takes most of 10 years to get drawn and would sure be nice to have everything in your favor once youve sacrificed that much for a 3 day hunt. Just my opinion however.

I agree completely with your theory but is there really anywhere for them to go? From my understanding its not like they can run to the next farm over..........at least not with a challenging swim. lol

I had built up to four or five priority points and then accidently put in for the antlerless hunt Presidents Island.

Of course I was drawn for it but I wasted 5 years ofpriority points.

You're not the only one who has done that.

A coworker and I applied every year except he applied separate. About year six he texts me all excited telling me he drew the Island. I figure this is pretty much impossible as it has been taking an average of eight points to get drawn. He sends a screen shot of the permit awarded screen and then it becomes apparent; he entered the wrong hunt/ date code. Instead of putting down the Dec buck hunt he accidentally listed the Oct Doe- Spike hunt. He was sick at the loss of six years of points and having to start over at zero. Last I checked it's still a pretty sore topic to him.
