I was reading another post today and it got me thinking about what the ideal food would be. If I were to plant one thing for the sole purpose of attracting deer I would plant corn. However, a cornfield will not attract deer for several months like a green-field would. I plant several acres of corn every year for my own consumption and I always leave a good portion for my deer. When they hit a cornfield you cannot step anywhere in that field without stepping on a deer track. After they finish a good portion of the stalks have been knocked down. If I were planting the ideal food plot for deer I would plant a field of corn and after it matured I would leave it stand. After it turned brown I would till the center of the field and leave a perimeter of corn standing (several rows deep) and plant a green-field in the center and have a stand high enough where I could see over the corn into the green-field. The deer like the security of standing corn. What are your thoughts as to planting the ideal food plot?

Summer mix is corn and cowpeas and winter would be wheat and winterpeas. but i have a plot almost identical to the one you want.

Yours sounds pretty ideal, I have done this myself by planting corn around the edges of a plot where I couldnt get peas to grow. The corn you leave standing, the peas you till up in the fall and replant austrian winter peas in the spring. You can replace the corn edge with kenaf or surghum for a slightly thicker edge, but as you stated, the deer really like the standing corn, and the corn can keep the deer off the "interior" plot. Stripping the corn like you are describing can also be done to make a very large plot break down into several smaller ones.
