I woke up yesterday morning like a child on Christmas morning. Not only was it going to be my first hunt of the year but it was 39 degrees and a perfect wind to hunt my favorite set. I called my father-in-law to make sure he was up and getting ready and started my morning routine.

After our typical wait and order mess up at Hardees put us behind schedule a little bit but with the moon being bright and being accustomed to our sets we knew we could slide in without needing our flashlights.

We pulled onto the property and hopped out to get our pack, bows and spray down with scent killer. We said our customary prayer, good lucks and I'll text you when I'm in the stand and headed out. We walk the 50 or so yards from the truck to the trail head with the typical "I hope I shoot something" and the "shoot...I just want to see something." I break off left to a lock-on overlooking a green field and catfish pond and he breaks right to his overlooking the peach orchard and acorn flat. Once I get to the stand I take off my pack and hook it and my bow to my pull up rope. When I make it the 24' to my platform I put my knee on it and it shifts with my weight. Feeling insecure about the stand, I decide to climb down and head for a pop-up blind. As soon as I put my pack back on and picked up my bow I felt my phone vibrating in the chest pocket of my jacket....

I pulled my phone out wondering who in the world was calling me so early because everyone knew I was hunting and to text me. When I saw that it was my father-in-law I was expecting him to say he had just spooked something and it was headed my way. Instead I heard "Stay calm... I had just stepped onto the platform and was reaching up to secure my harness to the tree and both straps holding my stand snapped and I fell come up here and help me." Running up and seeing him laying on his side with the tree-stand next to him was a sight and feeling I hope to never experience again! After rushing him to the hospital and making sure he was ok the adrenaline began to wear off. The rush of emotions it brought about was completely overwhelming! I can only remember four times that I have ever cried prior to yesterday with those being when my grandmother died, when I married my best friend, when I adopted my son and when I saw my daughter for the first time. It could have just as easily been me, I could have not went and he would have been by himself, he could be paralyzed or he could have died! It was a total miracle that it wasn't a lot worse than it is. He dislocated his left hip, shattered his hip socket, fractured his shoulder and some other minor bumps and bruising. Its very hard to see the glass half full sometimes when its half empty but God definitely had his hand over us both yesterday morning. It is gonna be a rough road for him and our family over the next several months. I like to ask all my fellows hunters to please remember him, the doctors and our family in your prayers.
Thanks and God Bless,
