Well, I'm going on an fossil hunt with Diehard soon,... so I'm hoping to learn some stuff... I'm thinking arrowheads and that type of thing. I don't own a metal detector and I'm totally not looking for a new hobby that will take ALL my time - but I hike a LOT so I thought knowing some tips would help me say "hey, I need to walk down there and..." while I'm out hiking.

I posted a comment on another thread. You just have to think what was important to an Indian, water, shelter, food, and high ground. Find high ground near a water way and you will find a camp. Its truly amazing how many there are ( arrowheads and artifacts ). I dare say there isn't a square acre without a artifact on it somewhere. Obviously plowed ground is a big factor in finding them. Most southern facing cave and bluff shelters where utilized at some point in time.
