The 32nd Annual Southeast Deer Study Group Meeting!

Just got my "Tentative Program", and I can't wait! :)

This is "THE" annual meeting of minds of the most serious deer hunter managers!
http://www.cpe.vt.edu/sdsg/

The "THEME" for this year's meeting is Herds Without Hunters: The Future of Deer Management?

There have been many megatrends related to deer management across the Southeast over the past century (e.g., stocking and restoration efforts, early buck only deer seasons, the initiation and promotion of either-sex deer hunting, emphasis on habitat management, leasing of hunting rights, quality deer management, etc.), but none will likely have more impact in the future than declining deer hunter numbers combined with increasing limitations on the use of hunting and hunter access in some areas (e.g., urban, exurban).

BSK, will you be involved in any of the presentations at this year's meeting?

A big part of what I like about this annual meeting is that many of the presentations are actual research papers, where the findings are simply "presented", often for the very first time.

A few of the presentations of particular interest to me personally:

"The Public and Deer Management"

"Expansion of Human Development and Potential Impacts on Deer Management"

"Recruitment of Women Hunters: An Opportunity for Growth"

"Deer Check Stations help define Disease Distribution: Implications for Lyme Disease Risk in Tennessee"

"Relationships Between Movements and Body Characteristics of Male Whitetailed Deer"

"Measuring Fine-Scale Deer Movements and Environmental Influences using GPS Collars"

"Using Fractal Analyses to Characterize Movement Paths of Deer"

"Impact of Hunting Pressure on Adult Male Whitetail Deer Behavior"

"Evaluation of the Pennsylvania Sex-Age-Kill Model"

"Utility of Trail Camera Users to Assess Deer Population Sex and Age"

"When Check Stations Don't Exist: A Mail Survey for Biological Data Collection and Hunter Interaction"

"The Effect of an Antler Point Restriction on Harvest of Deer in Missouri"

"Impact of Coyotes on Fawn Survival in South Carolina"

This is very unlike the many other more "commercialized" deer-hunting-themed meetings and conventions where it's mainly a bunch of commercial vendors trying to sell you something, and/or some celebrity hunters attempting to entertain you and/or sell you their latest endorsed product.

That said, there will be some commercial vendors at the SEDSGM, but they're displaying their wares in a separate place and have little to no role in the actual meetings and presentations. I do enjoy visiting with the vendors and will surely buy some more "stuff", but appreciate the format of this event like no other. Of course, I should add that this annual meeting might not be possible without the support of some of these vendors, so for that, I'm certainly appreciative of their role here.

Re: The 32nd Annual Southeast Deer Study Group Mee

Got my info in the mail today as well. However, I'm gonna miss this year. :(

I heard they were going to call BigGameGuy out of the crowd and
"Ask him a question!" ;)

Stick,

Sorry you're missing this year.
Just thinking the other day, was it four or five heaping plates of crawdads you ate at the SEDGM in Baton Rouge?
That was some great food down in LA!
