Those things will wear you out. You haven't lived until you hear the line snap on the cast and see $40 dollars worth of A rig and baits sail off into the water.
I fish them with braid and I pray every cast the braid doesn't eat into the spool.

I use 40lb braid. Its also great to have braid when you get hung up, a good lure retriever with a hook on it will get your rig back for you most of the time. tiptons-golden-retriever (1).jpg

Where can I get this contraption?
I think academy sells one. I like the type that looks like little chains hanging off it. Also another tip is using lightweight wire hooks on the rig. That way if it gets hung up and the lure retriever can't get to it then with 30# or 40# braid you should be able to pull the hook straight and it come undone.

Lure retriever

The ones with the hook work better than the chain style. I've used both, the hook style will grab hold of it and let you work it loose. The chain style rarely works for me if it's hung up bad. Almost always got them back with the hook style. Umbrella rigs will catch you more fish around cover ( rocks and lay downs) but you will get hung up. With a good lure retriever and braid you will get it back most of the time as long as you don't set the hook into a big log that felt like a "bump ". Ask me how I know lol.

That lure retriever is the by far the best one. I have used several different types and they all work. Only difference is I have never lost a lure with the one in the pic and it will retrieve an alabama rig. With all the others, especially in Canada fishing around the rock with crankbaits, even though they worked, we still would lose 3 or 4 crankbaits a trip, and we only crankbaits about half the time we are there. The last 4 trips to Canada, we never lost a crankbait and I have not lost one here with the lure retriever in the pic.

if you want to catch fish when nothing else will, throw an umbrella rig. lol, if your shoulders are still in good shape. there is a reason why they are banned in a lot of tournaments.

i am ignorant, why do they catch more? i google it, looks insane. where do you throw them?

It's a great winter time bait for me, basically all I throw, maybe a jerk bait on slow days. It mimics a small school of bait fish, making it more enticing for a lethargic bass thinking it will get a big meal out of it. I mainly fish it around deep cover (rocks bluffs brush piles) anywhere bass hang out at. Fish it with a slow retrieve sometimes pausing a second and reeling again will entice a bite ( it gives the appearance that the baitfish got spooked and suddenly took off). I usually have around $25 in a rig not cheap but there worth it. Get a good lure retriever and you will almost always get it back if you get hung up. Just my 2 cents.
