Lime, lime , lime! A good rule of thumb is at least 1 ton per acre.
Try to start out with winter grain rye, not ryegrass. Lime your plots now and disc them in mid September. Plant/fertilize anytime after that.
Next spring frost seed some clover into the plot in early March and lime it again according to soil test. Bush hog it in May and let the long rye plants act as green manure to build your soil's organic matter. If your soil is poor to marginal do this for 2-3 years. If your soil is good, then lime it anyway and plant winter oats and essex rape.
