Ive got an area on the spine of a ridge top with an old logging trial running on it about 200yds long. I had a dozer run down it over the weekend just to clean it up. Now I have a strip about 200yds by 12' wide freshly graded and with the soil completely exposed. It is partially shaded. I will never hunt it because it runs right out the back of our hunt camp and am not looking to put in full fledged working food plot. Just looking for a good throw and grow I can pick up locally that will give the deer a good variety to eat throughout the year with out creating a ton of work for me

Stopped by Knoxville Seed today and asked if they could custom mix me something. He pointed to a premix they make right there and said it would be perfect for what I needed. Contains Iron & Clay Peas, Soybeans, Millet, Buckwheat, Sorghum, Cowpeas, and Sunflowers. Bag big enough for an acre cost $46. It is their Summer Blend. He said they make a winter blend as well for the fall.

A lot of those seeds need to be covered to germinate well. When I think "throw and grow", I think small seeds and cereal grains. Clover, chicory, brassicas, wheat, and oats would be my choices.

That sounds a lot like Whitetail institute's "Power Plant" mix or Pennington Seed's "Spring/Summer Deer mix". I've used both and they are my favorite. Once they get going they produce an unbelievable amount of feed for deer plus they will bed in the stuff because of it's height. They aren't really a "throw & grow" mix though because those large seeds need to be covered with a disk.

Put it down this weekend. Just spread it on the ground. We'll see what happens. My property butts up to Big South Fork and there isnt a food plot or field for miles in any direction, just hardwood forest, so it cant be any worse than what was there to begin with.
