In my experience, sunset is the best time. They do tend to come out of the nest a bit in the morning, but they are more active in the evening due to it being a little warmer. Whatever time you go, don't expect to see as much activity when it's cold. They spend most of their time nested on cold days. They are also less active all together this time of year. Food is scarce and they are conserving calories.

I've been watching the past several weeks and seems like here as long as it's not real windy they get out for the first hour or 2 of daylight and the last hour or .

This time of year they almost hibernate for days in end. They nest and lay around only feeding every couple of days. Still can catch some out but not as much. Early morning and late evening seem to be best.

Went out yesterday afternoon and didn't see a single squirrel. I did catch a raccoon out and about in the middle of the day, which was weird.
