Thanks to Bowriter for bringing this issue up on another threadSpook Spann's 103-yard facing away mule deer shot and NuFletch's shameless promotion of their product that obviously promotes unethical shots. After watching this, I went to their site and requested that they remove this and any reference to this shot be removed completely from any future advertising and kindly ask that you do the samethis is the type of fodder that the anti-hunting community goes nuts over! It makes no difference if you are an archer or not, your still a hunter and we need to police our own from time to time!

The shot can be seen here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LS9YmBEGlD0

I just recieved a letter from the CEO of this company, NuFletch Archery, and even though I was glad he replied so quickly, I'm a little surprised at the manner in which he defends this type of shotregardless of whoever the archer is, and the equipment they are using.

Please, take a minute and send a quick letter and perhaps we could start a movement within the industry that often focuses more on product selling than it does ethical standards.

Here is the letter I just recieved.

Your comments clearly establish your ethical concerns for bowhunting. I
appreciate your willingness to take the time to sit down and type a letter and
provide your feelings in writing. It makes me understand that you are highly
motivated by what you believe. Perhaps if more people took the time to act
instead of just griping all the time the world would be a better place. I do
however take great offense to your comments that indicate my shameless promotion
for the sole purpose of promoting my product. The shot Spook took was by a
person that shoots his bow daily. He makes a living through performance. Not
every person is capable I don't know if you know Spook but he is truly a
person that seeks perfection. This is to include his diet, workouts, and
spiritual beliefs. Please don't get me wrong... I completely agree with your
assessment that 100 yard shots with a bow are not ethical... at least in most
cases. We have had others shoot animals at distances of 60 yards... we chose
not to promote this as we do not feel they are qualified to shoot at even that
range. Here, we chose to promote not only a product performing at great
distances, but confidently moved forward to show what can be done if you are
willing to dedicate yourself 100% to a sport. Ultimately we felt that this shot
was taken by a person that has honed his skills to peak performance. All said,
I will again review the promotion and ask others in the industry for their
input.

I personally thank you for your time and your attention to this matter,

Sincerely,
John

Seems like a good guy but that was indeed a stupid shot. Mostly due to the directionthe deer was facing, I wouldn't even take that shot at 20 yards. Not to mention no bow out there shoots quick enough that a deer will not have time to move while the arrow is traveling that far. He got lucky and should quit while he is ahead lol

Btw- this inspired me to try shooting at 100 yards once.. I can't find my arrow :(

Just spoke with Mr. Marshall. Nice guy, we talked for quite some time about a variety of things including the ethical or unethical aspects of the Mr. Spann's shot. The upshot (pardon the pun) of it all is, I am still of the opinion it was an unethicals hot. He is not completely of that opinion although he does recognize the validity of that thinking.

Should that video be used to promote his product. In my opinion, no. But it isn't my product.

I believe public opinion will be the final answer. Unfortunately, I am, sure there are some bow shooters out there who will buy his product and start taking 100-yard shots.0

Thanks and nice job Bowriter and others that may have made a phone call or sent an email.

That is exactly what I took from the emails he and I have shared back and forth todayhe fully believes that this particular shot by Spann was perfectly okay because it was Spook Spannif it had been anyone else he would've agreed it would have been unethical. I pointed out in a later email to him, that if he looks at how we feel about it....imagine how the anti-hunters feel about this, and all it would take would be for a few over-zealous lawmakers to get a hold of this and push for a major change in the bowhunting atmosphere. While that's a longshot, it is certainly in the realm of possibilities, and I for one just believe that we shouldn't give them anymore ammunition than possiblea five minute search on youtube already promotes some of that, why some of the "leader's" and "faces" of the industry feels they need to add to it to stay relevant and sell products is beyond me. You are also spot-on with the fact that a percentage will try shots with these because of what they saw in that video.

The problem with the shot is it was not ethical for even Mr. Spann. I don't care if he can stack them in the X ring all day long at 100 yds. On a living animal, he has no control on how much the animal moves between the time of his release and when the arrow gets there. It is not like shooting a rifle.

And, unless the camera was at a totally different angle than from where he was shooting, it wouldn't have been an ethical shot angle even at 20 yds.

Bowhunters like that who care more about the trophy and not how many animals they have to wound and lose before they put one down on a lucky shot don't belong in the sport.

SCN-I pointed that oput andhis response was that Spann felt at the time of the shot, he could make it no question about it. I pointed out that due to body angle and opportunity for the deer to move, no one could say that. Not much reply to that other than if I met him I would understand. He kept talking about how he kept working out and practicing and eating right and all that bs.

I just thanked him for calling and we parted on a friendly note. He is in a bad position and there isn't much he can do but package his product and keep selling it. For sure, unfriendly or impolite contact does nothing but fuel the fire.

the response I got from mr marshall:

I wish I could take the time to address all the comments on both sides of this issue... I do respect your time and willingness to share concerns for our sport. Agree... anti hunter organizations need nothing more to gripe about. I sincerely appreciate your concerns and will be discussing the issues developed with Spook and others in the following days. Propaganda is a shot over the bow and a strong insinuation I will allow to pass.... I simply ask you as a common person to understand that we try to do what it right and carefully choose our options for promotion. As Spook comes under the crosshairs both fans and opponents take advantage to voice their opinions. I do not have an ear for opinions, just facts... the fact is we carefully considered the shot long before we put the video on line... until today, not (1) person has uttered one word about this video. The stick hit the pot and people are stirring and voicing..... again, long before the stirring stick we made the decision to show that our product had energy to make a lethal kill at the 100 yard distance. We too do not wish to convey to anyone that 100 yards shots are the norm or simply by shooting NuFletch you can take irresponsible shots at great distances. The ethical choice comes between the man and the string. If Jesus himself put all of us together into a group and allowed the man that has never committed an unethical act cast the first stone at Spook or NuFletch.... I would feel pretty safe.... To know there are people out there that want to protect our sport is comforting....again I appreciate your concerns and your time.

Sincerely,
John

If a 100 yard shot is legal, why complain about it?

Legal is legal. If 100 yard bow shots are that bad, then the game department should make it illegal.

Legal doesn't make it right either.

How can the game department make shot distances legal or illegal?

It is us hunters that have the responsibility to be as ethical as possible to the game we intend to kill.
