Speaking of firsts..

This has been a long season for me, but had a chance to experience a few "firsts" this past Sat. First, I decided to take a locon and stick ladder setup in and place it in a spot that I've been meaning to get set up in for years, so I did. Then, I decided that since I was already out there, I'd go ahead and hunt it, so after cleaning up at the truck, and changing into the fresh clothes that I had brought along, I trekked back into the woods to the newly erected setup. Got in at 12:59. I was thinking that's a good time to be setup and ready for the way I usually hunt. FF to 3:30ish, saw movement, it's a doe. More movement, it's a big buck! After a few seconds of debating on whether to take the narrow shot I had, or to wait for him to move, I chose to make the shot. And I did. Ok, now to the short list of firsts.

1 First time I've literally done a "hang and hunt".

2 First time I've killed a deer this late in the season.(Last time ever was Dec 1st years ago)

3 First kill with my 300WSM, actually my first year to hunt with it.

4 First kill with the handloads for it, 150 gr Nosler Accubonds (eh, added that in for perspective :) )

5 First time using my jet sled to drag it out (Highly recommended)

6 And first time I've ever had to even consider NOT having a 130" buck mounted.

Don't give up till it's over. ;)

Oh, and for those who've not already read the gen forum write up, that scar on his neck and across his back, is from an attempted spotlight kill from earlier in the week most likely. It had scabbed over slightly, but, apparent to me that that's what it was, I just know the area.

Guess I've missed a lot of threads due to deer hunting lately, being too engaged in politics, etc.,
so sorry am just now seeing this, MUP.

I know where you're hunting, and there really aren't many bucks going to get that old and that big around there, and same can be said for most of East TN --- over-hunted, heavily poached (at least compared to much of Middle & West TN). Really, most private property in East TN is more heavily hunted than most public land in the rest of the state.

That buck is an outstanding "trophy" any where in Tennessee!

Thanks my friend, I specifically held to taking the 300WSM this season from start to finish to try to connect with it. I was beginning to think it might be a bad luck charm :) But it sure felt good to break it in, and on top of that using the handloads that I had worked up for it. A pretty good feeling of satisfaction I have to say.

Thanks a bunch Wes. It is definitely an "above average" buck for this area. I've been peeking in the pol forum too :) It's nice knowing that other folks realize how it is around here with the poachers and trespassers, and even poaching trespassing meth heads! But you really hit the nail on the head with your statement about private property being hunted as much or more than public land. That really is the case around here, and I'm sure other areas nearby. I've gotten as many as 5 different pics of trespassers on my small property in a couple months time span before. Like I said earlier, I'm amazed I have had the success I have had over the years with the outlandish competition, on my own property.

Thanks! I decided to mount it fairly quickly after entertaining the thought of not getting it mounted. It is an exceptional buck for this area, well TN in general actually. I'll just be looking for a new place to live once I break the news to my wife. :shock:

No! She has eyes like a hawk! :rotf: I actually have a mount lying in the floor behind the couch in the living room, with the hopes she would cave and just tell me to go ahead and put it on the wall, but nope, she ain't giving in! :bash: And now I'll have this one to boot!
